CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Recent Loyola University Maryland graduate Franz Rassman, a three-year starter on the Greyhounds men’s basketball team, was named the Corvias Patriot League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday, an award voted on by conference member schools that honors the top performer in the classroom and competition.

Rassman graduated in May with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance while compiling a 3.941 grade-point average. He has begun his professional career as an investment banking analyst at Friedman, Billings, Ramsey & Co. in Washington, D.C.

The award is presented annually to one male and one female Patriot League student-athlete. Those who are named Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports – as Rassman was in men’s basketball – are eligible for the honor.

Rassman is the second Loyola student-athlete to earn a Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award since the Greyhounds joined the conference for the 2013-2014 academic year. Joe Fletcher, an All-American men’s lacrosse standout, was honored with the award that season.

In addition to becoming the second Loyola student-athlete to be honored, Rassman is just the second men’s basketball player to earn the award since its inception in 1992. Colgate University’s Adonal Foyle, a 12-year NBA player, was the 1996 honoree.

“Franz was the definition of a scholar-athlete during his four years at Loyola,” Greyhounds head coach G.G. Smith said. “This award is a tremendous reflection on the hard work and dedication he showed as a Greyhound. Franz applied himself at the highest levels in the classroom, the weight room and on the court over his four years, and we are very proud of him. He is going to be a great business professional, and we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.”

In addition to earning Patriot League Men’s Baskeball Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors in March, Rassman was also named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the third year in a row. He was also recognized for the third-straight season as a CoSIDA Academic All-District performer, the first Loyola men’s basketball player to receive that distinction in as many seasons.

On the court, Rassman started the last 78 games of his career and played in all but one during his career. He averaged 8.3 points and 4.8 rebounds as a senior. He finished his career at Loyola tied for second all-time in games played (124), ninth in blocked shots (69), 22nd in field-goal percentage (.4776) and 23rd in rebounds (453).

The native of Washington, D.C., is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma and Chi Alpha Sigma, the national business and national college athlete honor societies. He also is a two-time recipient of the Sellinger School of Business Academic Achievement Award.

As a student, Rassman completed two internships, one for Morgan Stanley and another for Gold & Co. Commercial Real Estate. He also is Bloomberg certified in fixed income securities and Morningstar Direct.

Rassman was a two-time team captain for the Greyhounds, and he also worked as a member of Loyola’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. With that group, he volunteered with the York Road Initiative and helped coordinate a food drive that set a record delivery to the Maryland Food Bank.
