Loyola Basketball Remembers John Wooden

June 8, 2010

Baltimore, Md. - The passing last week of legendary UCLA head coach John Wooden was not lost on Loyola seventh-year head coach Jimmy Patsos. Patsos was in a unique circle of college basketball coaches who delved into the mind of the man who won 10 NCAA Championships, all coming during a 12-year period when the Bruins dominated college basketball.

"I was fortunate enough to be invited into his home several times and sit down and really chat with him," Patsos reflected. "A lot of what he taught -- educating the student-athlete, preparing them for life after basketball -- I've tried to incorporate into what we are doing here. He was an amazing, amazing man. Not just because of the championships he won, but how he lived his life and the lessons that he taught."

Patsos' basketball relationships have afforded him the opportunity to get to know Coach Wooden and the fact that Wooden knew Loyola and Greyhounds basketball is something of which Patsos is extremely proud.

"He knew Loyola and Loyola Basketball and he knew what we were trying to do here," Patsos said. "He meant a lot to the game of basketball and his legacy will endure forever."

Patsos and the Greyhounds get the 101st season of Loyola Basketball underway on November 12 when they host Drexel in Reitz Arena.
