Patsos Named Finalist For Skip Prosser Award
March 17, 2013
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland men's basketball coach Jimmy Patsos was named one of 20 finalists for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award, an honor Patsos received last April at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet.
The award is named in honor and memory of the late Prosser who was the head coach at Loyola, Xavier and Wake Forest before passing away in July 2007. It recognizes those who achieve success not only on the basketball court, but coaches who display the ideals possessed by Prosser off it.
Patsos is in his ninth season at Loyola and has guided the Greyhounds to a 21-11 record in 2012-2013. On Tuesday, Loyola will make its second-straight appearance in postseason play when it hosts Boston University in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament at 7:30 p.m. in Reitz Arena.
The Greyhounds have set several program firsts over the last two years, including the first back-to-back 20-win seasons in school Division I history. Tuesday's game will also mark the first time since the school elevated its status to Division I in 1981-1982 that the Greyhounds have played in postseason competition in consecutive years.
Loyola's 45 wins over the last two seasons - the Greyhounds finished the 2011-2012 campaign with a 24-9 record and the school's second-ever berth in the NCAA Championships - have brought the first 20-win seasons in as many years since the Greyhounds won 20 or more in 1946-1947, 1947-1948 and 1948-1949.
In addition to leading his team to many accomplishments on the court, Patsos often took time during road trips to take the Greyhounds to cultural events and locations. This season, the team visited the Experience Music Project Museum in Seattle, took tours of the mansions in Newport, R.I., visited the National Civil Rights Museum and the location where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was shot in Memphis, and took in a Broadway production of Golden Boy in New York City.
Patsos is joined as a candidate for the 2013 award by John Beilein (Michigan), Tony Bennett (Virginia), Rick Byrd (Belmont), Kermit Davis (Middle Tennessee), Billy Donlon (Wright State), Jim Engles (NJIT), John Gallagher (Hartford), Anthony Grant (Alabama), Ben Jacobson (Northern Iowa), Jim Larranaga (Miami, Fla.), Ryan Marks (UT-Pan American), Bob McKilop (Davidson), Joe Mihalich (Niagara), Dave Paulsen (Bucknell), Brett Reed (Lehigh), Zach Spiker (Army), Bob Thomason (Pacific), John Thompson III (Georgetown) and Bruce Weber (Kansas State).
The 2013 recipient will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet in Atlanta, site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
