Cormier Named To All-Patriot League Third Team
March 3, 2014
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - After missing the second half of conference play with a broken hand suffered in a February 1 game, Loyola University Maryland senior guard Dylon Cormier was named to the All-Patriot League Third Team by the conference’s coaches on Monday.
Cormier was leading the Patriot League in scoring by more than three points per game (21.2) at the time of his injury. He was also first in offensive (3.0), second in steals (2.2) and sixth in total rebounds (5.8) per game.
The Baltimore native was 14th in the NCAA in scoring, and he continued to top the League’s scoring race until after Saturday’s games. Players must compete in 75 percent of their team’s games in order to qualify for the Patriot League, as well as NCAA, statistical titles.
Cormier fractured two bones in his right hand during a loose-ball scramble in Loyola’s February 1 game against the U.S. Military Academy. He had surgery to mend the injury on February 5, cutting short a season that would have gone down in the Loyola records books as one of the program’s best.
Despite the injury, Cormier finished seventh all-time at Loyola in points scored (1,659), just 46 out of third place where he was on pace to finish. He also is second all-time in free throws made (459) and attempted (662), in addition to steals (185).
The 6-foot-3 guard became the first player in school history to open a season with back-to-back games of 30 or more points, scoring 31 in the opener at Binghamton University and 34 two days later at Cornell University. He tallied 20 or more in Loyola’s first five games of the year, matching his career-high with 34 points on November 20 at UMBC.
Cormier scored 20 or more points in 14 of the 21 games he played this season, and he reached the 25 point more on eight occasions.
A two-time All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honoree (First Team in 2012-2013, Second Team in 2011-2012), Cormier is the first Loyola men’s basketball player to earn All-Conference honors in three-straight seasons since Mike Powell was an All-MAAC First Team honoree from 1995-98.
Loyola, which formally joined the Patriot League in July 2013, makes its first appearance in the Patriot League Championships tonight at 7:30 when it will host Lafayette College in Reitz Arena. Tickets can be purchased at LoyolaGreyhounds.com/tickets, and a live broadcast will be available at LoyolaGreyhounds.com/PLN.
