Drummond Garners Fourth MAAC Rookie Of The Week Award
Feb. 14, 2011
Edison, N.J. - Loyola freshman guard Justin Drummond (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) has been named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season it was announced today by the conference office. He is the first MAAC freshman to be honored four times this season.
Drummond was the team's second-leading scorer for the week and a key component in both of the wins. Monday at Siena, he scored consecutive three-pointers to fuel a 12-0 run to change a four-point deficit into an eight-point lead in a 76-69 road victory. He finished the game with 13 points and a perfect three-for-three from three-point range. Sunday against Canisius, he bettered his career-high with 22 points, scoring 10 field goals with eight assists in 22 minutes of playing time. He is the first Greyhounds player to score 10 or more field goals since December 2009.
For the three games, he averaged 14.7 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 56.3 percent (18-32) from the field and 60.0 percent (6-10) from behind the three-point line. After missing the first eight games of the season awaiting medical clearance to play, he has scored in double figures in seven of his 13 MAAC games.
Earlier this season, he collected consecutive Rookie of the Week awards after scoring a then career-high 21 points at No. 15 Georgetown and following that with 17 points at Howard. His first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in an overtime win over Iona earned him his third award of the season. He joined freshman guard Dylon Cormier as Rookie MAAC honorees after Cormier was selected on November 22 following his 20-point performance in a home win over UMBC.
Derek Needham of Fairfield received the MAAC Player of the Week honor, his second recognition this season.
The Greyhounds (13-12, 9-6 MAAC) currently reside in fifth place in the MAAC standings with a home game against Rider on Wednesday and a visit to Towson on Saturday. Both games are 7 o'clock tip-offs.
