BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland Head Coach Jimmy Patsos and Assistant Coach G.G. Smith both advanced to the second round of CollegeInsider.com's Shots From The Heart free-throw tournament.
The challenge, in its third year of existence, has a goal of raising awareness for the growing problem of heart disease, CollegeInsider.com and the Skip Prosser Foundation teamed with the American Heart Association to promote the tournament.
Coaches compete in a 64-person bracket, one for head coaches and one for assistants, and shoot 25 free throws per round. The first 10 shots are worth one point; shots 11-15 are good for two; 16-20, three; 21-24, four; and, attempt 25 counts for five.
In this year's first round, Patsos edged Niagara University's Joe Mihalich in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up, and Smith topped Niagara's Shane Nichols.
Patsos will face the winner of Santa Clara's Kerry Keating and St. Mary's Randy Bennett, while Smith will take on North Carolina-Wilmington's Jamie Kachmarik, in the second round.
Last year, Patsos advanced to the `Sweet 16' of the event.
