Edison, N.J. - Sophomore guard Jamal Barney (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern HS) has been selected as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week for games played between December 29-January 4 it was announced today by the conference office. On Saturday, Barney scored 41 points at Canisius, becoming only the third player on Loyola's 99-season history of men's basketball to top the 40-point plateau.

Barney capped his week by making 15 of 19 shots from the floor, three of four from three-point range and eight of nine from the free-throw line for his 41 points against the Golden Griffins. He added six rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and two steals.

The 41 points is tied for the sixth-best performance in the NCAA this season and his 15 field goals is the second highest number in the country thus far. The 41 points are the third-highest total in school history and his effort was the first 40-point outing since Joel Hittleman matched the school record of 44 on December 17, 1954, against Catholic. In an ironic twist, Hittleman, a Buffalo native, was in the stands to witness Barney's attempt at his record first-hand. The 15 field goals also are tied for the third-best output in school history.

Barney began the week by scoring 20 points at North Carolina State, a game in which he attempted the final shot that would have given Loyola a victory. He finished the week averaging 23.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 steals while shooting 53.8 percent (28-52) from the field, 42.9 percent (4-7) from three-point range and 71.4 percent (10-14) from the free-throw line.

This is the first time Barney has been recognized by the conference office. Earlier this season, the conference office acknowledged junior guard Brett Harvey (November 17) and sophomore forward Isaac Reid (December 22) as Players of the Week and freshman forward Anthony Winbush as its Rookie of the Week (December 8).

The Greyhounds (5-9, 1-2 MAAC) are back in action Monday night when they visit Niagara at 7 o'clock. Loyola returns home for the first time in 30 days Friday night when it hosts Fairfield at Reitz Arena.
