CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of Miami had three first-half stretches where it outscored Loyola University Maryland by 10 or more, and the Hurricanes defeated the Greyhounds, 71-48, Monday night at the BankUnited Center.

Save for a Jarred Jones free throw, Miami (8-5) scored the first 14 points of the game, leading 14-1 when Rion Brown hit a three with 16:13 left in the first half.

Eric Laster, however, hit back-to-back 3-pointers for Loyola (5-6),, cutting the Hurricanes' lead to seven. A Dylon Cormier putback at 14:33 got the Greyhounds within five, 14-9, and Denzel Brito made a slicing layup off the left side 1:21 later to cut the deficit to 14-11.

Davon Reed broke Miami's four-plus minute scoring drought with a three at 11:52, sparking a 10-0 Hurricanes' run that saw Loyola go without a point until a Franz Rassman tip-in at 6:38.

Rassman scored again on Loyola's next possession with a hook in the paint, but Loyola trailed 27-15 at that point.

The Greyhounds scored just five more points the rest of the first half, and none in the final 3:34, as Miami built a 43-20 halftime advantage.

Loyola scored the first points of the second half, but 21 was as close as it would draw the remainder of the game.

Laster finished with 13 points to lead Loyola, marking the first time this season a player other than Cormier has led the team in scoring.

Cormier added 11 points, and Tyler Hubbard tallied 10. Jones had a team-best six rebounds, and Denzel Brito led Loyola with four assists.

Brown led all players with 17 points, and he tied with Donovan Kirk for game-high honors with nine rebounds. Kirk scored 12, while James Kelly had 11 and Tonyee Jekiri 10.

Loyola opens Patriot League action on Thursday, January 2, 2014, when it playes its first-ever contest in the League. The Greyhounds host the U.S. Naval Academy that night, starting at 7:30 p.m.
