Harvey Carries Greyhounds To 72-67 Upset Win at Indiana
Dec. 22, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior guard Brett Harvey scored nine of his game-high 25 points during a three-minute stretch at the end of the game to stem a ferocious Hoosiers second-half rally and lead Loyola to a 72-67 upset win Tuesday night at Indiana's Assembly Hall.
The Greyhounds shot 58.6 percent (17-29) in the first half to build a 24-point lead and held a 46-28 lead at the intermission. A Harvey four-point play on Loyola's first possession of the final 20 minutes put Loyola ahead 50-28 with 19:31 remaining.
Indiana (5-6) used its three-quarter court press and three-point shooting to get back in the game quickly, using a 35-10 run over 14 minutes to take its first lead of the game at 65-62 on a Jeremiah Rivers conventional three-point play with 3:48 remaining.
Harvey took over the game from there as Loyola (6-5) held the Hoosiers to one field goal for the remainder of the game and turned the keys over to its senior guard. After making one of two from the line, Harvey stole the in-bounds pass and converted a layup to knot the score at 65-all with 3:04 left. Indiana quickly retook the lead on a Verdell Jones layup. A Loyola missed shot was followed by a pair of missed free throws by Rivers with just over two minutes left.
Breaking the press, Harvey scored on a three-pointer to return the lead in Loyola's favor and was fouled. His free throw made the score 69-67 with 1:50 left. Both teams missed shots over the next minute and Rivers again missed a pair of foul shots with 37.4 seconds left. Indiana opted not to foul initially as the ball remained in Harvey's hands. Finally, with 17.1 ticks remaining, Harvey was fouled and calmly stepped to the line and made both for a four-point lead, 71-67.
On the defensive end, sophomore forward Shane Walker tipped away an Indiana entry pass and the ball ended up in the hands of junior guard Jamal Barney with 3.9 left. Barney made the second of his two free throws to cement Loyola's biggest regular-season win in Division I and first-ever win over a Big Ten team in eight tries.
Loyola jumped out early, taking advantage of hot shooting and Indiana turnovers to score the game's first 15 points as seven different Greyhounds scored. After four Hoosiers points, Loyola tallied 14 of the next 17 points and led 29-7 at the nine-minute mark on a layup by senior guard Tony Lewis assisted by Barney. The teams played even for the remainder of the first half with Indiana scoring the final six points, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Jordan Hulls.
Harvey's 25 points led all scorers and he added five assists and four rebounds. Barney was the only other Greyhound in double figures with 13 points, grabbing four rebounds with three assists and two steals. Sophomore forward Anthony Winbush collected a career-high six steals to go along with his eight points. Walker corralled a team-high seven boards and blocked two shots.
For the Hoosiers, Rivers scored 15 points, but was just three of nine from the foul line. Jones scored 14 and Christian Watford added 10.
The Greyhounds break for the Christmas holiday before traveling to play Bucknell on Monday night at 7 o'clock. Loyola is home again on January 2 when it hosts Rider as MAAC play reconvenes.
