Barney Scores 1,000th In Men's Basketball Win Over Mount
Dec. 11, 2010
BALTIMORE - Jamal Barney scored his 1,000th collegiate point, and Shane Walker recorded his second-straight double-double, as the Loyola University Maryland men's basketball team defeated Mount St. Mary's University, 65-42, on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,402 fans at Reitz Arena.
Mount St. Mary's cut Loyola's 11-point halftime lead to nine on a Danny Thompson layup 48 second in the second half, but Loyola scored 14 of the next 17 points to go ahead by 20 on a Jamal Barney layup with 12:54.
On the play, Barney recorded his 1,000th collegiate point. He scored 31 as a freshman at Providence College before transferring to Loyola and scoring 969 at Loyola.
Another Greyhounds player recorded a milestone on Saturday, as well. Brian Rudolph finished with six assists, passing Kevin Robinson (1971-75) for sole possession of third-place all-time at Loyola with 425 career assists.
Walker scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games after recording 14 and 10 on Wednesday night at George Mason.
Erik Etherly set a career-high with 17 points and added nine rebounds, and Barney finished with 10.
No Mount St. Mary's player scored more than eight points, the total which Danny Thompson and David Golladay finished with. Defensively, Loyola held The Mount to just 28.8-percent (17-of-59) shooting from the field and 2-of-13 from 3-point range.
During the 14-3 second-half run, Barney scored half of the Greyhounds' points. He made a fast-break layup and ensuing free throw after being fouled with 17:22 to play, and after Rudolph and Walker made layups on back-to-back possessions, a Barney runner and Etherly steal, fast-break layup and free throw pushed Loyola's lead to 18, 48-30, with 13:35 to play.
Loyola charged out to the lead in the first half, going up by as many as 16 with 4:02 to play. The Greyhounds recorded assists on nine of 13 first-half baskets, and they held The Mount to just 30.3-percent (10-of-33) from the field before the break.
The Greyhounds took a double-digit lead with 13:53 to go in the first half after causing a Mount St. Mary's turnover. Erik Etherly and J'hared Hall trapped Josh Castellanos in the backcourt, forcing a traveling violation. In the half-court set, Brian Rudolph found a slashing Etherly who had his second dunk in four minutes to put Loyola head, 14-4.
Rudolph's assist was his second in as many possessions, and second on four consecutive trips down the court, for the Greyhounds. After another Mountaineers turnover, Rudolph threw a perfect alley-oop pass to Shane Walker for a dunk, and Rudolph then pulled down a defensive rebound and fed an outlet to Robert Olson for a fast-break layup.
Mount St. Mary's finally snapped a 13-0 Loyola run with a Lamar Trice jumper from the top left at 12:17 with the Greyhounds up, 18-6. The Mount cut Loyola's advantage to 10, but Olson drained a three from the left wing with the shot-clock expiring to push its lead back to 13, 23-10.
Walker extended the lead to 14, 28-14, with a 3-pointer from the top off another Rudolph assist with 4:52 to go in the first. He scored again on an alley-oop dunk from Barney on Loyola's next possession.
Walker led all scorers with 15 first-half points, while Etherly had 10. Rudolph tallied five assists, and Walker had seven rebounds in the first half.
The Mountaineers' Julian Norfleet had a chance to pull them back within single-digits at halftime, but his running jumper was swatted away by Walker, his second block of the half, giving the Greyhounds a 34-23 advantage at the break.
Loyola hits the road for a pair of games in our nation's capital - next Saturday at Georgetown and December 22 at Howard - before returning to Reitz Arena on Tuesday, December 28, to face Bucknell at 7 o'clock.
