Coppin State Defense Shuts Down Men's Basketball, 63-58
Dec. 9, 2009
Baltimore, Md. - Coppin State's defense limited Loyola to shooting 28.4 percent (19-67) for the game and just 18.5 percent (5-27) from three-point range to get its first win in its newly opened Physical Education Complex, beating the Greyhounds 63-58 in overtime Wednesday night in a non-conference contest.
After the Greyhounds scored the final points of regulation to force overtime, Eagles reserve guard Vince Goldsberry outscored Loyola in the overtime, accounting for seven of his team's 11 points. Coppin State (5-3) held the Greyhounds without a point for the final 2:05 of the contest, tallying the final seven points to post the win.
The overtime would not have even been possible had it not been for Loyola (4-5) overcoming a five-point deficit over the final 1:58 of regulation. Down 52-47, junior guard Brian Rudolph connected on a driving layup, but missed the free throw to remain down three with 1:46 to play. The Greyhounds forced a Coppin State turnover and senior guard Brett Harvey knotted the game at 52-all on a three-pointer with 48.4 ticks remaining.
Following a Coppin State timeout, Loyola's defense held as sophomore forward Shane Walker blocked a shot by the Eagles' Sam Coleman and senior forward Jawaan Wright corralled the rebound. The Greyhounds called a timeout of their own with 13 seconds left, but a three-pointer by junior guard Jamal Barney was missed and Goldsberry grabbed the rebound to force overtime.
After grabbing a one-point lead at 17-16 on a conventional three-point play by sophomore guard J'hared Hall with 8:38 left in the first half, the Greyhounds allowed Coppin State to score 11 of the next 14 points and found itself facing their largest deficit of the game at 27-20 with two minutes remaining before the intermission.
Loyola battled back for much of the second half, eventually piecing together a 13-3 run to grab its largest lead of the game on a three-pointer by freshman guard Robert Olson to make the score 39-35 with just over eight minutes to play. But the Eagles scored on their next possession and on Loyola's turn with the ball, Coleman pinned Olson's layup attempt against the backboard for a block. Wanting a goal-tending call, the Loyola bench received a technical and two Goldsberry free throws knotted the score at 39-all with 7:39 left.
Greyhounds sophomore forward Anthony Winbush tried to get Loyola started quickly in the extra session, scoring on a jump hook on the first possession and then sinking a three-pointer from the corner with just over three minutes to play to give the Greyhounds a 57-56 lead. A single free throw pushed Loyola's lead to 58-56 with 2:05 remaining, but it would be the Greyhounds' last lead as Coppin State scored the final seven points.
The Eagles were led by Lenny Young's game-high 21 points and Coleman came off the bench to post a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. For Loyola, Barney tallied 16 points to lead the team and Harvey's 10 points made him the only other player in double figures.
A three-game road stretch concluded, the Greyhounds will take off for exams and return to action on December 19 when they host Howard in Reitz Arena at 1 o'clock.
