Winbush Leads Men's Basketball In Win Over Saint Peter's
Dec. 8, 2012
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Anthony Winbush led Loyola University Maryland with 16 points and tied teammate Julius Brooks for game-high honors with eight rebounds, as the Greyhounds used a 12-0 second-half run to defeat Saint Peter's University, 61-55, on Saturday afternoon at the IZOD Center in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.
Winbush made 5-of-8 shots and both of his 3-point attempts while playing all by 21 seconds of the game for Loyola (8-3 overall, 1-1 MAAC).
He scored 11 points before halftime and his three from the top right side put Loyola up 27-22 with 43 seconds to go in the stanza. Dylon Cormier, who scored 15 points, then made it a seven-point halftime advantage with a twisting runner less than three seconds before the half expired.
Saint Peter's (4-5, 1-1), however, scored the first 11 points of the second half, and Loyola was down 35-29 when Yvon Raymond scored on a layup, was fouled and made the free throw.
Winbush cut the deficit to four for Loyola after an offensive foul on Saint Peter's, but Desi Washington hit a three with 15:03 on the clock, pushing the Peacocks' advantage to 38-31.
Washington's basket, three of his game-high 18 points, was the last basket Saint Peter's would score with Chris Burke made a three with 8:43 to play, a stretch of six minutes, 20 seconds.
The Peacocks were 0-of-7 from the field during the run, and the had just one offensive rebound in the stretch.
"We took a punch form Saint Peter's when we stopped playing well on defense and executing on offense, but I was pleased with the way that we responded," Head Coach Jimmy Patsos said. "The guys knew that getting to 1-1 in the (MAAC) was very important, and I felt like they came out knowing that was the most important thing."
Loyola continued to hold a lead between three and seven points before going up 56-47 on two Olson free throws with 4:23 remaining.
Saint Peter's whittled its deficit to three, 58-55, on a Washington jumper with 62 ticks on the clock, but the Greyhounds had two offensive rebounds on their next possession, and Olson finished it off with two free throws.
The Peacocks shot just 38.8-percent from the field, and Loyola had eight blocked shots, four by Brooks. The Greyhounds also controlled a 37-27 advantage on the glass, led by Winbush and Brooks' eight each. Loyola also scored 14 points on 11 offensive rebounds.
In addition to Winbush's 16 and Cormier's 15, Rassman scored a career-high 13 on 6-of-8 shooting in his first collegiate start.
Olson scored eight and had a season-high five assists. Brooks tallied seven points to go with his eight boards and four blocks, and Eric Laster grabbed a career-high four rebounds.
Darius Conley had 12 points for Saint Peters, and Raymond lead the Peacocks with six rebounds.
The Greyhounds have a week off before returning to action with a non-conference tilt on Saturday, December 15, in Retiz Arena against Mount St. Mary's University. The game, which will be broadcast on MASN, the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network, will be the 168th meeting between the schools.
