Field-Goal Droughts Hamper Men's Basketball At Mount
Dec. 7, 2013
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Loyola University Maryland went without a field goal for a stretch of five minutes in the first half and nearly 10 minutes in the second, and Mount St. Mary's University took advantage, defeating the visiting Greyhounds, 70-58, on Saturday afternoon.
A Tyler Hubbard four-point play - he hit a three from the top left side and made the ensuing free throw after being fouled - gave Loyola a 12-8 lead with 13:56 left in the first half, but the Mountaineers used a 15-3 run to lead 23-15 with 4:52 showing before the break.
The stretch included a span of 5:22 that Loyola did not make a free throw. After Hubbard's three, the Greyhounds (5-3) did not register a point until a Franz Rassman layup at 8:34.
Despite the drought, Loyola trailed by just five, 32-27, at halftime, and the Greyhounds had played less than three minutes with leading scorer Dylon Cormier. The senior guard, who entered the game averaging 25.1 points in the Greyhounds' first seven, picked up his second foul 2:47 into the contest and spent the rest of the half on the bench.
Cormier scored his first points of the game with 17:15 left in regulation, and he had two more layups as part of an 8-3 Loyola run that cut its deficit to two, 39-37, with 14:46.
Julian Norfleet and Rashad Whack bookended a Jarred Jones basket with a pair of 3-pointers for The Mount (3-7), and its lead was back to six at 13:44.
Damion Rashford hit his first career three 23 seconds later, and after a Taylor Danaher dunk in transition put The Mount back up five, Cormier scored four in a row to pull within one, 47-46, at 11:17.
Gregory Graves, however, hit a runner in the lane to push Mount St. Mary's advantage back to three, and Will Miller hit his second three of the half to extend it to six.
A Cormier layup at 11:34, however, was the Greyhounds' last field goal until a Rashford basket with just 1:43 remaining. Loyola hit eight free throws during that stretch, but The Mount extended its lead to 16 before Rashford's layup.
Cormier finished with a team-high 13 points, and Rassman scored 10 of his 12 in the first half. Rassman and Eric Laster tied for team-high honors with seven rebounds.
Four Mountaineers scored in double figures with Whack (18) and Norfleet (16) leading the way.
The Mount also had 18 turnovers in the game to Loyola's 14, but the Greyhounds were only able to convert them into 12 points.
Loyola will take the next 12 days off for final examinations before playing next when it hosts Stony Brook University on Thursday, December 19, at 7:30 p.m.
