Cormier Sets Career-High With 27 In Win At Coppin State
Nov. 28, 2012
BALTIMORE - Dylon Cormier scored a career-high 27 points, and Loyola University Maryland used a suffocating defense in the second half that held Coppin State University to 22.6-percent from the field in the half, and the Greyhounds dispatched the Eagles, 67-51, in non-conference action on Wednesday night.
Cormier made 7-of-14 shots from the field and hit 11-of-12 at the line, hitting all but his penultimate try from the charity stripe. He also had eight rebounds and four assists.
"Dylon was tremendous tonight," Head Coach Jimmy Patsos said. "He is from Baltimore, so these games mean an awful lot to him, and they mean a lot to us as a program. Our guys love playing these local games because we have so many players from this area. They want to win them, and you could see that in Dylon tonight."
With the win, the Greyhounds tied their best start in school Division I history after eight games at 7-1, matching the record set by last year's team
Loyola never led the in first half and trailed, 30-27, at the half. Tyler Hubbard tied the game with a three from the right side 1:15 into the game, and Cormier gave the Greyhounds their first lead with a pair of free throws 35 seconds later.
Michael Murray made it a one-point game, making 1-of-2 free throws at 17:53, but that was as close as the Eagles (1-5) would draw from that point forward.
Following Murray's layup, Anthony Winbush made a free throw, and Cormier hit his second 3-pointer of the game at 16:46. Winbush followed with a layup at 16:17, and Jordan Latham capped an 8-0 Loyola run with a pair of free throws at 15:45 to push the lead to 40-31.
Coppin State pulled back within two, 40-38, minutes later on a Collin Johnson layup, but Hubbard hit another three on Loyola's next possession to give the Greyhounds a five-point cushion.
Winbush finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds for his second career double and first since November 2008. His 12 rebounds were also a career-best.
Cormier eclipsed his previous career-best of 26 points set last December at George Washington University.
Jarred Jones scored nine points, all in the second half, and Robert Olson had seven points and matched his career-best with seven rebounds. Hubbard scored six, and Latham had four points, six rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots.
Loyola held a 48-37 advantage on the boards and limited the Eagles to 29-percent from the field in the game. Coppin State was also just 3-of-27 from behind the 3-point arc.
Murray led the Eagles with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Greyhounds, which have now played eight games in 16 days, travel to Fort Myers, Fla., for their next game, a 7:05 p.m. contest at Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday night.
