Catamounts Edge Men's Basketball At The Wire
Nov. 24, 2010
BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Vermont made four free throws in the final 1:49 and held Loyola University Maryland scoreless for the final 2:37, en route to a 51-48 non-conference victory on Wednesday night in Patrick Gymnasium.
Joey Accaoui hit a pair of free throws with 1:49 remaining to give Vermont a 49-48 lead, and Simeon Marsalis made two from the charity stripe with 10.2 seconds left for the host Catamounts (3-1 overall), who won the America East Conference and advanced to the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
Jamal Barney, who led Loyola with nine points, had a three-point attempt with five seconds left go off the rim before the final buzzer.
Barney tied the game at 42-42 with 6:29 to play, knocking down the first of two from the line. Neither team scored over the next two minutes until the Catamounts broke the scoreless stretch with a Matt Glass bucket at 4:23.
Barney missed a jumper on Loyola's next possession, but Shane Walker pulled down the rebound and laid it in, tying the game at 44-44. Luke Apfeld, however, got the lead back for Vermont with 3:37 remaining.
Cormier scored 27 ticks later to pull Loyola even again with the Catamounts, but Evan Fjeld made 1-of-2 from the line to give Vermont a 47-46 advantage with 2:58 to play.
Just 21 seconds later, Barney gave the Greyhounds a 48-47 lead, their first since the 10:37 mark in the second half.
The Greyhounds stopped Vermont on its next trip down the court, but the Greyhounds could not convert on the offensive end, and Accaoui made two from the free-throw line for Vermont to give the Catamounts a 49-48 lead with 1:49 left on the clock.
After a missed shot on the offensive end, Loyola forced a travelling violation by Accaoi with 41 seconds remaining.
Vermont, however, forced a turnover and got the ball back with a one-point lead and 12 ticks left, setting up Marsalis' free throws.
Fjeld led all players with 15 points, and Matt Glass had 10 rebounds for the Catamounts.
The Greyhounds return to the Baltimore area for their first post-Thanksgiving game when they travel down Cold Spring Lane for a 7 p.m. contest Monday at Morgan State.
