Laster's 3s Ignite Furious Comeback, MBB Wins In OT At UMBC
Nov. 20, 2013
CATONSVILLE, Md. - Eric Laster made four 3-pointers in a 41-second stretch near the end of regulation, helping Loyola University Maryland cap a rally from 17 points down, and the Greyhounds defeated host UMBC, 89-83 in overtime on Wednesday night at the RAC Arena.
UMBC (2-3 overall) took a 17-point lead, 58-41, on two Joey Getz free throws with 9:44 remaining in regulation, but the Greyhounds (4-0) went on a 10-0 run to cut its deficit to 58-51 on two Dylon Cormier free throws at 6:29.
A Cormier three at 5:26 cut the deficit to 60-56, but a Rodney Elliott layup at 2:10 pushed UMBC's lead back to nine, 72-63. Malik Garner. Two Tyler Hubbard free throws for Loyola made it a seven-point game, but Malik Garner scored on a layup at 1:46 and made 1-of-2 at the line 16 seconds later to make it a 10-point lead, 73-63.
Laster hit his first three with 1:22 on the clock, but after being fouled on the in-bound play without any time running off the clock, Getz made 1-of-2 at the line to push the Retrievers' advantage back to eight.
Just six seconds later, Laster pulled up for a three in transition from the top of the perimeter, and he swished it to make get Loyola within five, 74-69.
Quentin Jones scored on a jumper for UMBC with 58 seconds left, but Laster bettered that with a three 11 seconds later, getting Loyola within four, 76-72.
Cormier came up with a steal off a Garner turnover, and he found Laster for his fourth three in 41 seconds, and Loyola trailed by just one, 76-75.
Devarick Houston missed a layup on the offensive end for UMBC, and Denzel Brito corralled the Loyola rebound. He found Cormier on a run-out, but Getz fouled him with 11.3 left on the clock. Cormier made the first to tie the game, but missed the second, leaving the Retrievers with a chance to reclaim the lead.
Elliott took control and drove downt he left side of the lane, drawing a foul with just over three seconds left. He missed both free throws, however, sending the game to overtime tied at 76-76.
A Brito jumper gave Loyola the lead 24 seconds into overtime, marking the first time Loyola had been in front since the 9-minute mark in the first half.
Jarred Jones made it an 80-76 lead with a layup off an R.J. Williams assist. Chase Plummer pulled the Retrievers back within two on a pair of free throws, but two Jones free throws and a Cormier layup made it 84-78 Loyola with 2:22 on the clock.
Garner converted on a layup at 2:08, but Cormier made 1-of-2 at the line with 50 seconds left, and Loyola was up by at least five the rest of the game.
Cormier matched his career-high with 34 points - a total he set just 10 days ago in an overtime win at Cornell - and he recorded his second career double-double with 11 rebounds. It was also Cormier's 30-point effort this season.
Laster tallied a career-best 16 points, and Jones had 14 points and seven rebounds. Williams tallied 10 points and six assists in the game.
Four UMBC players scored in double figures, led by Garner's 18 and Plummer's 17.
Loyola finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field after shooting 55.8 percent in the second half and overtime. Conversely, UMBC shot 48.3 percent in the first half, but just 35 percent after the break.
The Greyhounds forced 20 UMBC turnovers, 12 coming off Loyola steals. Jones had a team-high four steals, while Williams had three.
Loyola will take a break for the remainder of the week before playing at the University of Connecticut on Tuesday, November 26, at 7 p.m.
