Jones Scores 26 In Men’s Basketball’s Wire-To-Wire Win At UMBC

CATONSVILLE, Md. - Jarred Jones scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Loyola University Maryland led UMBC wire-to-wire in a 76-57 non-conference victory on Monday night at the Retrievers Athletic Center.

Jones made 10-of-16 shots and recorded a double-double for the second game in a row. Tyler Hubbard hit four 3-pointers in the game’s opening seven minutes and finished with 13 points, while Franz Rassman scored eight of his 12 in the second half.

Behind a pair of Hubbard threes and interior baskets by Eric Laster and Cam Gregory, the Greyhounds jumped out to a 10-3 lead. Gregory kicked a pass out to Hubbard for his second three at 15:56, setting the tone for the Greyhounds’ offensively.

UMBC (0-3) got back within a point, 10-9, on a Rodney Elliott three 49 seconds later, but Hubbard responded with a 3-pointer at 14:38, and Loyola (1-2) was up by at least three the rest of the game.

A Gregory basket at 5:04 made it a 16-point advantage, 38-22, and Eric Laster scored an and-one at 3:09 to make it 41-25. Cody Joyce scored for the Retrievers with 49 seconds left before halftime, cutting their deficit to 10, 41-31, but Laster sent the Greyhounds to the locker room up 12, 43-31, with a tip-in at the 32-second mark.

Loyola continued to use a strong inside presence in the second half, outscoring UMBC, 40-28, in the paint during the game. Loyola had 14 second-chance points on 12 offensive rebounds. The Greyhounds had a 14-rebound advantage overall in the game, 42-28. In addition to Jones’ 11, Laster grabbed seven, Rassman had six, and Gregory corralled five.



The Greyhounds scored the second half’s first six points, all by post players, and 12 of the stanza’s opening 14 points to lead by 22, 55-33, on a pair of Rassman free throws.

UMBC was able to draw back to within single-digits on a Joe Sherburne three at 12:01, but Loyola scored the next eight points to lead 65-48 on a Jones layup at 8:56.

Loyola shot 48.3 percent from the field and was 16 of 19 (84.2 percent) from the free-throw line. The Greyhounds also had a season-high 15 assists with 11 turnovers. Laster, Gregory and Matt Staubi tied for team-high honors with three assists each.

Elliott was the only UMBC player in double-figures, finishing with 19 points. Joyce had eight points and a UMBC-high nine rebounds.

The Greyhounds play their second-straight road game on Saturday, Nov. 21, when they head to Olean, New York, for a 7 p.m. game at Saint Bonaventure University.
