Men's Basketball Turns Back Fairfield Rally For 59-52 Win
Nov. 16, 2013
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland opened the game on a 13-3 run and eventually went up by 12 in the first half, but Fairfield University held the Greyhounds without a field goal for the more than 11 minutes to start the second. Loyola did not, however, led the Stags take a lead of more than one-point, and the Greyhounds came back for a 59-52 non-conference victory in front of 2,007 fans on Saturday night.
Loyola (3-0 overall) led by 32-23 at the half, but Fairfield (1-2) yielded only four free throws to the Greyhounds in the first 11 minutes of the second stanza.
Meanwhile, the Stags took a 37-36 lead on a Marcus Gilbert layup at 11:49, their first advantage of the game.
After Fairfield took the lead, Loyola held the Stags scoreless for over three minutes, and a Dylon Cormier offensive rebound and putback at 8:51 broke the field-goal drought.
The Stags went back up one on an Amadou Sidibe layup on the ensuing possession, but R.J. Williams pulled Loyola in front with a driving layup at 8:08.
A K.J. Rose layup at 7:43 gave Fairfield another lead, one that would turn out to be its last of the game.
Cormier scored on another layup at 6:48, and he converted a traditional 3-point play with a layup and free throw at 4:09, pushing the advantage to four.
Coleman Johnson cut the lead to a pair, but Jarred Jones hit two free throws for Loyola at 3:27. Gilbert made 1-of-2 at the line at 2:25, and Fairfield trailed three, 47-44.
Loyola showed good ball movement on its next trip down the court, and Jones made a pass to Tyler Hubbard in the left corner where Hubbard hit a three to put Loyola up 50-44 with 1:56 remaining in regulation.
A Jones post move turned into a layup at 1:15, and Loyola led 52-44 before Doug Chappell hit a deep three with 58.5 left, making the game a two possession one.
Loyola made 6-of-7 free throws after that to seal the game. The Greyhounds were 24-of-32 from the line in the game, while Fairfield made just 5-of-15.
Cormier scored a game-high 20 points, while Williams tallied eight points, four assists and three steals for Loyola. Jones and Hubbard each scored seven off the bench for the Greyhounds.
Chappell was the only Fairfield player to score in double figures with 16. Johnson scored nine and had 11 rebounds, while Gilbert finished with eight points and nine rebounds. Fairfield had a 48-23 advantage in rebounds, but the Stags netted just 15 second-chance points on 18 offensive boards.
With the near-sellout crowd loud from the start, Cormier scored on a layup and hit a three from the top of the perimeter to make it 13-3 Greyhounds just 4:44 into the game.
Hubbard's first three, at 11:33, gave Loyola an 18-6 lead, its largest of the night.
Fairfield used an 8-2 run over 103 seconds to trim its deficit to 23-19 on a Chappell three at 4:04, but the Greyhounds pushed their advantage back to nine by halftime.
Loyola shot a season-low 34.1 percent from the field, but the Greyhounds committed just seven turnovers to Fairfield's 20.
The Greyhounds are back in action on Wednesday, November 20, at 7:30 p.m. in another game that will be televised live on MASN. Loyola will travel across Baltimore to face UMBC in that contest.
