Two Hubbard Free Throws With 4.4 Left Lifts MBB At Navy
March 1, 2014
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Tyler Hubbard made two free throws with 4.4 seconds remaining in regulation, and Loyola University Maryland beat the U.S. Naval Academy, 67-65, on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action.
Hubbard gave the Greyhounds (11-18 overall, 6-12 Patriot League) a 65-63 lead with just over 13 seconds left by making 1-of-2 at the free-throw line, but Worth Smith made a layup on the other end to tie the score with under five seconds left.
After a Loyola timeout, a pass was headed to Hubbard on the sideline when he was fouled by Brandon Venturini, sending him to the line for the final points.
R.J. Williams sealed the win with a steal less than a second before the expiration of regulation.
Loyola will learn its Patriot League Tournament fate later this afternoon, following the conclusion of the Lafayette College-U.S. Military Academy game. The Greyhounds will play on Monday, March 3, but they could host a game or travel. Check LoyolaGreyhounds.com for more information.
Franz Rassman tied his career-high with 15 points for the Greyhounds just three days after he scored 15 for the first time on Wednesday night against College of the Holy Cross.
Smith scored a game-best 19 points for the Midshipmen (9-20, 4-14), while Venturini added 15, and Thurgood Wynn had 10.
Loyola took three leads in the game's first five minutes, none greater than two points, before Navy grabbed a three-point advantage on a Smith layup and free throw at 13:41. The Midshipmen built the advantage to nine midway through the half , but Rassman tied the score at 30-30 with a traditional 3-point play 48 seconds before the end of the half.
Venturini hit a three on Navy's next possession, but a Laster layup with seven seconds left sent the teams to the locker room with Navy clinging to a 33-32 lead.
The Midshipmen maintained a lead throughout the majority of the second half until Hubbard hit a three to tie the score at 56-56 with 7:10 left in regulation.
Smith scored on Navy's offensive end, but Rassman tied the game with a basket at 6:23, and two Jones free throws gave Loyola its first lead of the half at 4:48, its first advantage in more than 30 minutes of action.
Zach Fong tied it again with two free throws for Navy before Laster knocked down a three at 4:06 off a Denzel Brito feed to put Loyola in front by three, its largest lead of the game. Venturini, however, responded in kind, making a three for the Midshipmen at 3:44.
The game became a defensive struggle from that point. Navy blocked two shots on Loyola's next possession before a Smith steal led to a Venturini transition layup attempt. Jones came from behind, however, and blocked that shot, preserving the tie.
Williams made 1-of-2 at the line at 2:28, pushing the Greyhounds up one, 64-64. The teams traded empty possessions before a Navy timeout with 1:03 left. It was Jones again on the defensive end to come up big for Loyola, getting a steal off Kendall Knorr with 48 seconds left.
Loyola called timeout, and Knorr blocked a Laster attempt, but the ball went out of bounds. Hubbard was fouled with 13 seconds left, and he made 1-of-2 to put Loyola ahead, 65-63, and setting up the final series.
Jones finished with two blocked shots, two steals and five rebounds to go along with his 10 points. Jordan Latham also swatted three shots. Williams, Brito and Jones each had three assists for the Greyhounds.
The win snapped a 12-game road losing streak, and it was the first road win in a Patriot League game this season.
