New Rochelle, N.Y. - Iona scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed as the Gaels completed a season sweep of the Greyhounds with a 70-62 home win Sunday afternoon at the Hynes Athletics Center.

"I was shocked at the emotional level against the second-place team that we showed today," Greyhounds sixth-year head coach Jimmy Patsos commented following the loss. "I thought we played well at times and got it going when we made that run. But we just didn't have that for the entire game and had a huge hole to climb out of after our start."

Iona connected on its first three shots to race out to an 8-0 lead 2:12 into the contest. The Gaels would shoot 54.5 percent (12-22) for the half in building a 14-point advantage at the intermission, leading 40-26. When Alejo Rodriguez converted a pair of free throws 45 seconds into the second half, Iona had its largest lead of the game at 42-26.

Loyola began its attempted comeback from there, piecing together a 15-3 run that was capped by three free throws by senior guard Brett Harvey to make the score 49-46 with 11:40 remaining. The Gaels still held that three-point lead with 9:37 to play, but Jonathan Huffman made three-pointers exactly one minute apart around a Greyhounds turnover to give Iona a 57-48 lead with 8:17 left to play.

The Greyhounds battled to get within six points with 2:28 left following a pair of free throws by freshman guard Robert Olson, but Iona got back-to-back layups from Huffman and Rashard McGill to lead by 10 with 62 seconds remaining.

Iona was led by Scott Machado's 12 points with Huffman finishing with 11 and Trinity Fields adding 10 off the bench. The Gaels shot 50 percent (7-14) from three-point range for the game and made 23 of their first 27 free-throw tries before missing their final four with the game decided.

Loyola also got two double-figure scorers off its bench as sophomore guard J'hared Hall scored a game-high 14 points and senior forward Jawaan Wright matched his career high with 13 points in reserve roles. Harvey also scored 13 points, making eight free throws as the Greyhounds' starters finished a combined 5-28 from the field.

The road schedule complete, Loyola will finish the regular season with four consecutive home games beginning with Wednesday's rescheduled contest against Saint Peter's. The game is the second of a doubleheader with the women's team that starts at 4:30 p.m.
