Big Run To Start Second Half Propels Lafayette Past Men's Hoops

Lafayette College hit four 3-pointers during an 18-5 run early in the second half, and the Leopards defeated visiting Loyola University Maryland 61-44, on Wednesday evening in the Kirby Sports Center.
Two R.J. Williams free throws for the Greyhounds (10-14 overall, 5-8 Patriot League) 1:40 into the second half made it a 33-27 Lafayette lead, but a Seth Hinrichs three in transition seven seconds later sparked the 18-5 run.
Hinrichs -- who missed the first meeting between the teams, a Loyola win, with an injury -- finisehd with 13 points for the Leopards (7-17, 3-10).
Just under a minute after Hinrichs' three, Zach Rufer hit one from the left corner with the shot clock buzzer sounding, and Lafayette was up 39-27.
Rufer hit another at 16:36, and after WIlliams converted a floartr in the lane for Loyola, Hinrichs made a 12-foot jumper to put the Leopards in front, 44-30.
Williams' runner with 15:58 left in the half was Loyola's last points for five minutes, three seconds until Jarred Jones hit a pair of free throws at 10:55. Jones' foul shots cut Lafayette's lead to 51-32.
Loyola led early in the game as Franz Rassman scored eight of his team-high tying 10 points in the first 8:30. Fellow starting post player Jordan Latham aded seven points in the first 14-plus minutes.
WIlliams matched Rassman for team-high honors with 10 points, and Latham finished with eight points.
Dan Trist led all scorers with 16 points for Lafayette.
The Greyhounds return to Reitz Arena on Saturday, February 15, for an 8 p.m. game against Boston University that will air on MASN, the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network.
