Men's Basketball Falls At Rider

Feb. 8, 2004

Box Score

Lawrenceville, N.J. - Freshman Shane James scored 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, but a 3-for-18 night from three-point range and a 6-for-15 night from the foul line would be too much for the Greyhounds to overcome on Sunday afternoon at Rider. The Broncs pull away in the second half and defeat Loyola 58-51 at Alumni Gymnasium.

A sluggish first-half saw Loyola and Rider shoot a combined 34 percent from the field. The Greyhounds applied early pressure, forcing six Bronc turnovers in the game's first 4:25. Loyola, however, could not capitalize on the offensive half and with five minutes off the clock, the game was tied 3-3.

"It wasn't a pretty game," says Loyola Head Coach Scott Hicks. "He fought hard, but missed too many free throws and lay-ups."

James kick-started the offense with seven straight Greyhound points and after trailing 21-15, Jamaal Dixon's fast-break bucket gave Loyola a 21-20 advantage. The Broncs took the lead back with Steve Castleberry's lay-in, but Bernard Allen's jumper with 25 seconds left in the half gave Loyola a 24-23 halftime lead.

Another slow start to the second half let Rider build a 39-28 lead with 12:46 left in regulation. The Greyhounds responded with a 12-2 run that began with a three-pointer from Sean Corrigan. James capped the rally with a pull-up three-pointer at 8:16 to bring the 'Hounds within one-point (41-40) before Rider's Edwin Muniz scored eight straight to make the score 49-40.

Loyola pulled back within four points, but could not get any closer the rest of the way out. Dixon added nine points for the 'Hounds as Jim Chivers chipped in with six points, three blocks and three steals.

Rider improves to 13-9 overall and 7-4 in the MAAC. Loyola, 1-21 overall, 1-12 MAAC, heads to Siena and plays the Saints on Thursday, February 12 at 7 p.m.
