NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - Julius Brooks scored on a left-handed layup as the buzzer sounded, and Loyola University Maryland defeated Niagara University, 89-87, in double overtime on Saturday night in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.

Niagara's Malcolm Lemmons tied the game at 87-87 with 2.6 seconds left on the clock, giving the Greyhounds (16-8 overall, 8-4 MAAC) the ball for a final play after Loyola called a timeout.

Anthony Winbush triggered the inbound and threw a three-quarter court pass to Erik Etherly at the Greyhounds' free-throw line.

Etherly turned and dumped the ball to Brooks on the left block, and the senior post player laid it off the glass as the clock expired. He finished with a career-high 14 points in the win.

Winbush scored 13 and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to go with four assists. Robert Olson finished with a team-high 23 points, but he was on the bench the final 7:27 of regulation and all of the overtime periods after fouling out.

R.J. Williams tied his career-best with 11 points, while Dylon Cormier scored 15, and Etherly finished with 11.

It is the second time the Greyhounds have won a game this season with a three-quarter court inbound pass from Winbush. He delvered a pass to Dylon Cormier on November 18, 2012, against the University of Albany in the title game of the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament. Cormier made the game-winner in that contest.

Loyola took a 50-41 lead on the MAAC-leading Purple Eagles (14-9, 10-2) with 13:19 left in the game, but Niagara scored 11 of the next 13 points at 52-52 when Antoine Mason converted a layup and free throw at 8:57.

The Purple Eagles went up by as many as five on three occasions after that, the final time on two Juan'ya Green free throws at 5:17. The Greyhounds rallied, tying the score at 64-64 on a Brooks basket with 2:57 left in regulation.

Green gave the Purple Eagles a 66-64 lead with two minutes left, but neither team scored for nearly 90 seconds. Two Winbush free throws tied the game with 35 ticks left, and then a Green 3-pointer as time expired went wide, sending the game to extra time

Loyola scored on its first five possessions of the first overtime and led, 76-68, with 2:51 on the clock as Brooks made two free throws.

Niagara chipped away, pulling within a point on a T.J. Cline with 18 seconds left. Cormier made a pair of free throws after being fouled on the inbound pass, pushing the Greyhounds' advantage to three.

Green was good on a three from the top left of the perimeter, this time, with just over eight seconds on the clock, tying the score at 79-79. Cormier missed a desperation jumper as the clock ran out, and the game headed to a second overtime.

Cormier gave the Greyhounds a one-point lead 1:03 into the second overtime, making a 3-pointer from the left side after a Green layup to open the period. Cline put the Purple Eagles up one with a layup, but Cormier responded with two free throws at 3:09.

Cline again gave Niagara a lead with a paint jumper at 1:57, but Etherly connected on a jumper 30 seconds later to push the advantage to Loyola's side, 86-85.

After a defensive stop, Williams made 1-of-2 at the line, giving the Greyhounds an 87-85 lead with 12 seconds showing.

Niagara called a timeout with just over six seconds left, and the ball went to Lemmons on the left side. He drove across the paint and was fouled, making both free throws to tie the game at 87-87, setting up Brooks' game-winner.

Green and Mason both scored 23 to match Olson for game-high honors, while Cline added 14 and Ameen Tanksley scored 12.

The Greyhounds, who are now 3-0 in overtime this season and 9-1 in extra time during Jimmy Patsos' nine seasons on the Loyola bench, return to Retiz Arena for their next game on Friday, February 8. They will face Siena College in a 9 o'clock tip-off that will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
