Iona Holds Off Late Charge By Men's Basketball
Jan. 27, 2013
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland trailed Iona College by 15 with more than five minutes to play, but the Greyhounds 12 of the next 14 points only to see the Gaels hold on for a 79-71 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory on Sunday afternoon in Reitz Arena.
A traditional 3-point play with a layup and free throw by Lamont Jones pushed Iona's advantage to 69-54 with 5:32 on the clock, but Loyola (15-7 overall, 7-3 MAAC) reeled off seven in a row, and Dylon Cormier capped the 12-2 run with a layup at 1:57 to trim the Greyhounds' deficit to 71-66 with just under two minutes left.
Cormier's basket, however, was the last the Gaels (14-7, 8-2) would allow until there were just 10 seconds left in regulation. During the stretch, Loyola managed just one free throw, and Iona scored eight.
Cormier tallied a team-high 18 points to go with seven rebounds and a game-best three steals.
Jones scored a game-high 23 for Iona, while David Laury recorded a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Iona led the entire game, save a tie at 2-2, and the Gaels extended their advantage to 11, 17-6, on a fast-break dunk by Tre Bowman with 12:11 to go before halftime. A Jones free throw just over a minute later made it a 12-point lead, but layups by Anthony Winbush and Erik Etherly, both off their own offensive rebounds, and a Robert Olson three cut the Greyhounds' deficit to 18-13 with 8:43 on the clock.
DaShawn Gomez hit a three for Iona at 1:28, pushing the Gaels up 13, 35-25, but Loyola made it 38-30 at the half on an Olson traditional 3-point play.
Jordan Latham scored nine in the first half for Loyola, making 4-of-6 shots, including his first career 3-pointer. He finished with 11 points.
Loyola trailed by seven, 59-52, when Winbush hit the back end of two from the free-throw line with 8:45 to play, but Taaj Ridley hit a three for the Gaels on their next possession to make it a 10-point lead.
Ridley's points were the first three of an 8-2 Iona run that culminated with Jones' 3-point play at 5:32.
Both teams made seven 3-pointers in the game. Loyola's seven tied its season-high.
Loyola had a slim, 40-40, lead on the boards with Winbush grabbing a team-high 10. Cormier and Etherly each had seven, and Franz Rassman pulled down five. Twenty of the Greyhounds' boards came on the offensive glass, but they led to just 15 second-chance points.
The Greyhounds were one off their season-high with 18 assists, and R.J. Williams tied his career-best with seven. Winbush, Olson and Etherly all had three assists.
Loyola continues MAAC play with a trip to Western New York for a pair of games. The Greyhounds first play at Canisius College on Thursday, January 31, followed by an afternoon affair at Niagara University on Saturday, February 2.
