New Rochelle, N.Y. - Sophomore Shane James scored 15 points and dished out six assists in a hard-fought loss at Iona College on Monday night. The Greyhounds, who shot 44.6 percent from the floor, ran into an Iona team that shot 56 percent in the second half to escape with an 80-71 victory at the Mulcahy Center in New Rochelle.

Iona scored the game's first five points and held that lead for almost 10 minutes. Freshman Freddie Stanback, who connected on a career-high five three-point field goals at Marist on Saturday night, tied the game with a three-pointer around the 10-minute mark.

Stanback gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the game only seconds later, draining his second-straight three-pointer to give Loyola the 20-19 advantage. The Greyhounds held that one-point lead (22-21) with James' runner at 7:15, but Iona responded with a 9-1 run to go back on top, 30-23.

Loyola chipped away and grabbed another one-point lead on Charlie Bell's free throws at 1:51. The Gaels brought the pressure and led by two when Bell's jumper from the corner sent the teams into the lockeroom knotted at 37-37.

James' drive and bucket early in the second half gave the Greyhounds their largest lead of the night at 43-41. The Gaels went to Steve Burtt, who scored 12 of Iona's next 19 points to give the home squad another seven-point advantage (58-51) at 11:15. Burtt ended the game with 28 points.

Junior Sean Corrigan twice cut the Loyola deficit to four points with a three-pointer from the top of the arc and Bernard Allen's deep two-point field goal (toe on the three-point line) cut the lead to 61-59 with 7:12 left in regulation. The Greyhounds would not get any closer, however, with 23 turnovers on the night.

Iona overcomes 20 missed free throws with 47.3 percent shooting from the floor to win its second straight conference game. The Gaels are now 7-11 overall and 3-5 in MAAC. Loyola drops to 3-14 on the year and 3-6 in the conference.

The Greyhounds are back home this Thursday to host Saint Peter's College. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
