Free-Throw Line Advantage Lifts Bison Past Men's Basketball
Jan. 22, 2014
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell University went to the free-throw line 34 times, more than double the 16 times that Loyola University Maryland got to the charity stripe, and the host Bison converted the attempts into 27 points for a 70-60 Patriot League victory on Wednesday night at Sojka Pavilion.
Cameron Ayers, who led Bucknell (9-9 overall, 4-3 Patriot League) with 19 points, was perfect at the line in 10 attempts. Ben Brackney made 6-of-7 while scoring 14, and Brian Fitzpatrick hit all four of his at the stripe en route to 12 points.
The Greyhounds (8-10, 3-4) entered the game averaging more free-throw attempts per game, 24.5, than any team in the conference. Loyola also did not take advantage of the 16 attempts from the line, making just eight.
Loyola trailed 31-28 at halftime, but Franz Rassman scored seven of the second half's first nine points, and his 3-pointer at 17:37 put the Greyhounds in front for the first time since the second minute of the game.
A layup and free throw by Dylon Cormier 58 seconds later put Loyola up five, 38-33, but Bucknell came back to tie the game at 14:46 on a Ryan Hill three.
Jordan Latham had a put-back layup 37 seconds later to put the Greyhounds back up, 42-40, but D.J. MacLeay scored on an inbound play for Bucknell, and Ayers made it a two-point Bison lead with a jumper at 13:25.
Cormier hit a three from the top of the perimeter to put Loyola in front, 45-44, but three Brackney free throws at 12:13 put Bucknell in front for good.
Cormier made 7-of-13 shots to score 20, leading all scorers. He also tied for game-high honors with seven rebounds. Jarred Jones contributed 13 points and six rebounds.
Loyola made five more field goals, 24 to 19, than Bucknell, but the free throws proved the difference for the Bison.
The Greyhounds return to Reitz Arena for the first time in 12 days for a 7 o'clock game on Saturday, January 25, against Colgate University.
