Cormier, Etherly Both Score 1,000th Career Points In Win
Jan. 21, 2013
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Dylon Cormier and Erik Etherly scored their 1,000th career points within eight minutes of each other, and Loyola University Maryland held off Fairfield University for a 68-60 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win on Monday night at Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard.
Etherly, who finished with 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds, scored his 1,000th career point after Loyola (14-6 overall, 6-2 MAAC) stole possession from Fairfield (10-10, 2-6) to open the second half. He made a layup and free throw after being fouled to put Loyola up 36-32 just 15 ticks into the period.
Cormier followed Etherly's lead just over eight minutes later, knocking down a 3-pointer from the left corner with 11:39 remaining in regulation. He scored a team-best 21 points for the Greyhounds.
Fairfield led for a large portion of the first half, going up five after scoring the first two baskets of the game, and after the Greyhounds quickly tied the score, the Stags were ahead four, 24-20 on a Derek Needham jumper with 3:22 left in the first half.
Needham scored a game-high 23 points.
Loyola tied the game with 48 ticks left in the first half on a Cormier layup, but Marcus Gilbert gave the Stags a 32-31 lead with 35 seconds on the clock.
Cormier, however, sank a runner with the first-half clock expiring, and Loyola was up, 33-32, at the break.
At the start of the second half, Cormier had a steal that turned into Etherly's 1,000th point, and Loyola slowly extended its lead.
Cormier's three that pushed him over 1,000 career points pushed the Greyhounds' lead to double digits for the first time, giving them a 50-40 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining.
The Stags closed to within three, 61-58, on a Maurice Barrow basket with 1:14 remaining, but the Greyhounds secured the win with free throws.
"I thought we battled and held them off tonight with big baskets when we needed them," said Loyola Head Coach Jimmy Patsos. "MAAC road wins are hard to come by, and this was a great one to close out."
In addition to Cormier's 21 and Etherly's 16, Jordan Latham had his second career double-digit scoring night, finishing with 10 points. R.J. Williams added seven points and three assists for Loyola.
Amadou Sidibe finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Stags.
The Greyhounds return to action on Friday night, January 25, with a 7 p.m. game at Manhattan College in Riverdale, N.Y., that will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
