Season-Highs In FG%, Assists Pace Men's Basketball Over Marist
Jan. 17, 2013
BALTIMORE - Four Loyola Unviersity Maryland players scored in double-figures, and the Greyhounds had season-highs in field goal percentage and assists during a 72-58 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win over Marist College in Reitz Arena on Thursday night.
Dylon Cormier made all but one of his eight shots, and he led the Greyhounds (13-6 overall, 5-2 MAAC) with 19 points. Cormier also tied his career-high with a game-best six assists.
In addition to Cormier's six assists, R.J. Williams had four to go with six points in his season debut, and Robert Olson passed out four.
Loyola shot 33.3-percent in each of its last two games, a win last Friday over Fairfield University and a loss on the road Sunday versus Rider University. The 33.3-percent marks were both season lows.
"We shot the ball better today because of how we moved the ball," said Jimmy Patsos, Loyola's head coach. "I thought that we found open guys, made the extra pass and general did the things that you need to do to be successful on offense."
Cormier did not miss on six shot attempts, two from three point range, in the first half, and his three from the top left side just over six minutes in pushed the Greyhounds out to a 16-7 lead. Back-to-back baskets by Brooks, the first on a layup and the second a dunk, made it 20-12 Loyola with 12:02 on the clock.
Marist's Chavaughn Lewis, however, scored the next four points, and the Red Foxes (4-14, 1-6) were within four, 20-16 with more than 10 minutes to go before halftime.
It was Loyola's turn for a mini-run, as Etherly scored four points, wrapped around a Cormier jumper, and the Greyhounds were up 26-16. Marist would not get closer than six from that point forward.
Adam Kemp, who tied Anell Alexis for team-high honors with 14 points, made it 40-31 Loyola 37 seconds before halftime, but Cormier used a Franz Rassman screen and slid the ball to a flaring Rassman for a 3-pointer with 3.1 ticks left before halftime.
Early in the second half, Brooks again had back-to-back baskets, both dunks, and Etherly converted a dunk off a Williams assist, and Loyola was up 50-33 less than five minutes into the stanza.
Marist got back to within nine, 52-43, on an Alexis layup at 13:01, but Williams knocked down his second three of the night, tying his career-high, 26 seconds later, and Loyola was ahead by double digits for the rest of the night.
Two games after defeating Fairfield while not making a 3-pointer, Loyola knocked down 5-of-7, as Cormier and Williams each were good on both of their attempts.
Loyola is back in action on Monday night when it travels to Bridgeport, Conn., for a 7 o'clock game against Fairfield.
