Iona Rallies To Top Men's Basketball
Jan. 15, 2012
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Robert Olson matched his career-high with 21 points, but Iona College came back from a five-point halftime deficit to defeat Loyola University Maryland, 74-63, Sunday afternoon in a early battle for first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Lamont Jones scored 25 for the Gaels (14-4 overall, 6-1 MAAC), and Mike Glover added 20 points and 15 rebounds.
Loyola (12-5, 5-2) led by as many as seven in the game's early going when Justin Drummond converted a traditional 3-point play 7:03 into the contest.
The Gaels rallied to lead by a point, 26-25, on a Jones bucket with 9:10 before the break, but the Greyhounds held them to just two more field goals and a Glover free throw before halftime.
Shane Walker gave Loyola a 36-31 advantage with a 17-foot jumper 31 ticks before the break, sending Loyola into the locker room up five.
Iona twice cut the Greyhounds' lead to three in the first two minutes of the second half, but Dylon Cormier scored four points in a row, the latter two coming on a pair of free throws with 17:29 in regulation, giving Loyola a 42-35 lead.
Iona, however, went on a 9-0 run, going up 50-46 when Jones made a layup in the paint with 12:13 on the clock.
The Greyhounds came back to tie on layups by Drummond and Cormier, but Iona then took the lead for good with a Glover tip-in at 10:02.
The Gaels extended their advantage to 67-55 at 4:52 on a Jones basket, but two 3-pointers by Olson and a pair of Cormier free throws pulled Loyola within six, 69-63, with less than four minutes to play.
Olson's three with 3:57 would be the last basket, however, for Loyola.
Scott Machado had 12 points and had nine assists for Iona, and Taaj Ridley added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Drummond was the only other Loyola player in double figures with 12. Etherly added nine and a team-high seven rebounds, and Cormier and J'hared Hall both scored eight.
Loyola returns to Baltimore for a pair of home games. The Greyhounds host Siena on Thursday, January 19, at 7:30 p.m., and Saint Peter's on Sunday, January 21, at 12 noon.
