BALTIMORE - Iona's defense held Loyola to just six second-half field goals and Rashard McGill twice went on five-point scoring runs in the second half with the second of those to start an 11-2 Gaels stretch over 3:21 as Iona pulled away for a 59-50 MAAC road win Monday night at Reitz Arena. The loss was the third straight for the Greyhounds.

The Gaels never trailed in the game, although Loyola tied it seven times and had numerous possessions to take the lead in the second half. With Iona leading 39-37 following a pair of free throws by Greyhounds sophomore forward Anthony Winbush with 12:22 to play, neither team would score for nearly four minutes.

Iona broke the drought with a Jermel Jenkins layup and a free throw on the following possession to lead 42-37 with just over eight minutes left. Sophomore forward Shane Walker knocked down a jump hook with 6:40 remaining and McGill scored five straight to start Iona's 11-2 run. When Rashon Dwight converted the second of two free throws for his fourth consecutive point, the Gaels had their largest lead of the game at 53-41 with 3:19 left to play and held on for the win.

Loyola, which played for the second time in three games with leading scorer Brett Harvey on the bench in street clothes, found itself down 9-2 just 2:25 into the contest Iona scored layups on its four possessions with Kyle Smyth adding a free throw on the last one for a conventional three-point play.

But the Greyhounds battled back with five straight points to tie the score at 9-9 and the game would be tied four more times prior to the intermission, the last time at 26-26 following a Winbush alley oop dunk from junior guard Brian Rudolph. The Gaels led at halftime, 28-26.

Winbush knotted the game for the last time at 30-30 with 18:12 remaining on a 10-footer, but McGill scored five straight in less than a minute for his first outburst and a 35-30 Iona lead with 17:16 left.

McGill finished with 12 points to tie for team-honors with Smyth. Alejo Rodriguez added 11 points and nine rebounds and Dwight scored 10 points for the Gaels, who won for the seventh time in their last nine games.

Winbush and Rudolph shared game-high honors with 13 points each for the only Greyhounds in double figures. Junior guard Jamal Barney scored just six points, shooting one-of-nine from the field, as his 10-game stretch of double-figure scoring games came to an end.

The Greyhounds are back in action Friday night when they host Marist at 7 o'clock in a nationally televised ESPNU contest. The game is the second of a doubleheader with Loyola's women's team, which hosts Manhattan at 4:30 p.m.
