WASHINGTON, D.C. - American University shot 81 percent, making 17-of-21 shots, in the second half, and the Eagles raced past Loyola University Maryland for a 65-51 Patriot League win on Wednesday night at Bender Arena.

The Greyhounds (6-8 overall, 1-2 Patriot League) led 26-22 at halftime after going up by as many as eight in the first half, but American (7-7, 3-0) scored the first 11 points of the second frame to lead 33-26 on a Darius Gardner layup 3:25 into the second.

Loyola tallied seven of the next nine points, however, to close within a pair, 35-33, on a Dylon Cormier layup, but American extended its advantage to 40-33 on a Jesse Reed three and Kyle Kager layup.

Denzel Brito hit a pull-up jumper at 8:33 to get Loyola back within four, 44-40, but American had another 11-0 run in it to go up 55-40 with 5:09 left in regulation.

Loyola could not get the Eagles' lead into single-digits after that point.

Cormier finished with 13 points, and Eric Laster scored all 11 of his in the first half for the Greyhounds.

American, which shot just 33.3 percent from the field in the first half, had four players score in double-figures. Kyle Kager and Jesse Reed both scored 16, while Gardner had 11, and Tony Wroblicky added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Eagles went up by three in the early going of the first half, but a Jordan Latham dunk put Loyola in front, 12-11.

A Laster three with six mintues to go in the half made it a six-point Greyhounds lead, and Latham had a tip-in at 3:33 to put Loyola up eight, 22-14.

Reed scored with 1:25 to go, getting the Eagles back within two, but Loyola led by four at the break.

Loyola is back in action on Saturday, January 11, when it returns to Reitz Arena to host Lehigh University at 4 p.m.
