Siena Snaps Men's Basketball Win Streak, 76-56
Jan. 4, 2010
BALTIMORE - Clarence Jackson scored 24 points and collected seven steals and Edwin Ubiles chipped in with 22 as Siena won its fifth straight with a 76-56 MAAC road win at Loyola Monday night in Reitz Arena. The loss snapped the Greyhounds' four-game winning streak.
Loyola was forced to play without starting guard and leading scorer Brett Harvey, who was hospitalized overnight Saturday and unable to play. It was the first game of Harvey's career that he has missed, snapping a string of 109 consecutive games played.
"I thought with Brett being hurt and not playing, we could `win one for the Gipper'," Greyhounds sixth-year coach Jimmy Patsos said following the loss. "But they [Siena] wanted it more. I saw a lot of guys in green jerseys jumping around and diving on loose balls. They just wanted it more."
The Greyhounds started the game inspired, scoring the first four points and held a 6-4 lead five-and-a-half minutes into the contest. But Siena (11-4, 4-0 MAAC) ran off the first of two 10-0 runs over the next 3:34 to go up 14-6. The second 10-point run came over the final three minutes of the half as Siena doubled the Greyhounds, 34-17. A basket by senior forward Jawaan Wright with two seconds remaining ended the run and made the score at intermission 34-19.
Down 15, Loyola (8-6, 1-3 MAAC) scored five points in less than a minute to pull within 45-34 with 12:51 remaining, forcing the Saints to call their only timeout of the game. Siena responded with 15 consecutive points in less than three minutes to take a 60-34 lead with 10 minutes left. After a bucket by sophomore guard J'hared Hall, the Saints converted consecutive three-point plays and Siena had its largest lead of the game at 66-36 with 7:10 remaining.
The Greyhounds again mounted a run, scoring 13 of 16 points to close the gap to 20 over the next three minutes, forcing Siena's starters to return to the floor. But the teams played even the rest of the way, ending with the 20-point deficit.
Jackson and Ubiles were the only Saints in double figures and Ubiles joined Ryan Rossiter and Alex Franklin in grabbing a game-high eight rebounds. Ronald Moore handed out 11 assists and collected four steals while shooting just one-of-seven from the field.
For the Greyhounds, junior guard Jamal Barney was the only Loyola player in double figures, reaching the plateau for the ninth straight game with 15 points. He also matched his career high with six assists and recorded three steals in 27 minutes off the bench. Freshman forward Julius Brooks matched his career best with eight points as all 10 scholarship players scored points.
Loyola is back in MAAC play Friday night when it travels to Fairfield for a 9 o'clock start on ESPNU.
