A native of Philadelphia, Stokes was a three-year starter and led the Terrapins in assists all three years. During his four years (1995-99), Maryland posted an 87-41 record, qualified for the NCAA Tournament all four years and reached the Sweet Sixteen during his junior and senior seasons. An all-ACC pick during his final season, Stokes was one of three Maryland players to start all 34 games that year. The Stokes name is plentiful throughout the Terrapins' all-time record book. He recorded the top two assist games in Maryland history with a single-game high of 15 against Western Carolina as a senior to break the mark of 14 established as a sophomore. His 213 assists as a senior are sixth most and his 593 career assists rank third all-time. His eight steals in a game is tied for third most while his 190 career steals are sixth in the Maryland annals. A high school all-America at Simon Gratz HS in South Philadelphia, Stokes was rated the nation's top prep point guard along with Stephon Marbury in several publications, including USA Today and Street & Smith Magazine. He played two seasons with current NBA star Rasheed Wallace and finished his high school career as the school's all-time assist leader. While at Simon Gratz, Stokes set the record books ablaze with four quadruple-doubles his senior year, including a 29-point, 17-assist, 11-steal and 11-rebound performance while guiding his team to the public league title. During his sophomore year, Simon Gratz went 31-0, capturing a national championship. Stokes also played with the Junior Olympic USA team his junior and senior years of high school and participated in the Toronto Raptors Summer League after his college playing days. He received a bachelor's degree in family studies from the University of Maryland in 2002 and spent one season as an assistant coach at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, N.C. Stokes' mother Patricia still lives in Philadelphia, as does his daughter Sharrell. His brother Terrance played basketball and was a shooting guard at Clarion University in Clarion, Pa.
