DAN FICKE played his first season free of injury or illness last year and was a key contributor off the bench when injuries beset the Greyhounds' front line in January ... his playing time was limited in his first two seasons, missing all of 2005-2006 following shoulder surgery and much of 2006-2007 with mononucleosis ... will be counted on to use his wide body as one of the options at forward off the bench ... more than makes up for his lack of height with his lower-body strength and an ability to come up with the basketball in traffic ... easily one of the stronger Loyola players ... possesses a nice touch around the basket ... could receive an extra year of eligibility to replace the year he lost to shoulder surgery.
Came into his own and played some key minutes for the Greyhounds in mid-January with the front line depleted due to injury ... after playing just 52 minutes in his two-plus seasons in the program, he played a key role over a four-game stretch, playing double-digit minutes for those four straight games and keying the home win over Iona (Jan. 6) ... against the Gaels, he played 17 minutes and grabbed a career-best five rebounds with a basket and an assist ... more importantly, he was on the floor for 10:32 of a 13:26 stretch when Loyola put together a 28-6 run to turn an eight-point deficit into a 14-point lead ... followed that with a 16-minute appearance at Kansas (Jan. 8), grabbing four rebounds against the taller National Champion Jayhawks while making three of his four free-throw attempts ... played 13 minutes in the win at Fairfield (Jan. 11) and then made both of his attempts from the field and added a free throw on a conventional three-point play for his career-best five points at Rider (Jan. 13) ... logged just 18 minutes the rest of the season as healthy upperclassmen began to take back those minutes ... averaged 3.8 rebounds during the four-game stretch while scoring 10 points ... coupled with the pair of free throws he made at Northwestern the season prior, his two successful free throws at Illinois (Dec. 28) make him a perfect four-for-four from the charity stripe in the state of Illinois.
Availability was limited to the first half of the season after suffering a bout with mononucleosis in early January ... did not dress for the final 20 games of the season following the diagnosis ... was coming off back-to-back games in which he scored his only points of the season at Northwestern (Dec. 27) and then played six minutes at Michigan State (Dec. 30) ... his four points against the Wildcats came in less than a minute of playing time with a field goal and a pair of free throws ... his only assist of the season came in the season opener when he played eight minutes in the loss to Navy (Nov. 10) ... also recorded a rebound and added a second rebound on the season at Northwestern ... played in each of the first four games of the season and eight of the 11 in which he was dressed.
Suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out of action and missed the entire campaign ... expected to retain a year of eligibility through the application of a medical redshirt with the NCAA.
Was a three-year starter at Regis Jesuit HS ... served as team captain during his junior and senior seasons ... averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds as a senior, earning all-conference honors following that season ... after his senior campaign, he was lauded as first-team all-conference, second-team all-city and second-team all-state ... also earned academic all-state honors and was selected as a McDonald's all-America nominee ... was invited to the NBA Players Association and adidas Superstar camps ... twice named Regis Jesuit HS player of the month.
The son of Bill and Joann Ficke... aunt Janet Ficke played softball and basketball at Adelphi ... cousin Ann Parker attends Loyola Marymount ... cousin Jack Parker attends Regis Jesuit ... majoring in Business at Loyola.
