Brian Blaney was promoted to associate head coach in the summer of 2006 and enters his second season in that role after serving as an assistant coach during his first two seasons at Loyola. His new responsibilities include increased administrative responsibility while continuing to work on game preparation and scouting and recruiting.
Blaney came to Loyola with an impressive background, having served under several of the top college basketball minds during his stays. His first season as a collegiate coach (1995-96) was spent as an assistant at Miami (Ohio) University where he learned from Herb Sendek, currently the coach at Arizona State University. The RedHawks reached the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) that year, the freshman season for Wally Szczerbiak. After one season in Oxford, he moved on to George Washington University, working on the staff of Mike Jarvis for two seasons and Tom Penders for one. In three seasons with the Colonials, Blaney participated in one NIT (1997) and two NCAA Tournaments (1998 and 1999).
He left Washington, D.C., for New York City and a position on Nick Macarchuk Sr.'s staff at Fordham University. The stay with the Rams was for only two months when Macarchuk was tabbed to guide Stony Brook University from Division II to the ranks of Division I. Blaney spent five years with the Seawolves (1999-2004) and the team increased its advancement in the America East Tournament each season, reaching the semifinals in 2004 following an upset of top-seeded Boston University in the quarterfinals.
His first coaching stop was as an assistant at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., where he spent one season following his graduation from Roanoke College in 1994.
A four-year letter winner, Blaney helped the Maroons to their greatest heights during his senior campaign as the team finished 26-2 with a berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Roanoke posted an impressive 61-20 record during Blaney's four seasons and climbed as high as No. 4 in the national rankings during his senior year.
A native of Holden, Mass., Blaney earned his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology at Roanoke. He is the son of current University of Connecticut assistant coach George Blaney, who also served as the head coach at Holy Cross College and Seton Hall University.
