Both a swimmer and diver for the Seadogs, Tynan at one time held all of the Loyola men's diving records. He also held the one meter diving record, which he set in 1972. He advanced to the national diving championships each of his four years at Loyola, placing as high as 21st in his senior year of 1975. In addition, he swam with distinction in the individual medley, butterfly and backstroke events. At the time of his induction he was 13th on the all time points list.
