A two-sport athlete at Loyola, J. Waide Howley `56 was a four-year member of both the men's basketball and men's tennis programs while at the Evergreen campus. A three-year letter winner in basketball, he helped lead the Greyhounds to an 18-8 record his junior year, and a 19-9 mark his senior season. Also a four-year letter winner in tennis, he played No. 1 singles both his junior and senior seasons, while serving as captain both years. Howley compiled an impressive 43-14 overall singles record, while going 36-13 in doubles action. He also helped lead the Greyhounds to the Mason-Dixon Conference Championship in both his junior and senior seasons. Loyola's 38-3 record during his final three seasons still stands as the best consecutive three-year mark in Loyola history. Upon graduation from Fordham Law School, he began a teaching and coaching career in his hometown of Greenwich, CT, which spanned 35 years. A 1971 recipient of Loyola's alumni of the year award, he has steered many student-athletes to his beloved alma mater.
