Pistorio was a two-sport athlete who excelled in basketball and golf. He was a three-year starter for the basketball team. As a junior, he led Loyola to the Mason-Dixon Conference championship and an NAIA Tournament bid. After leaving Loyola for two years of military service, Pistorio returned for his senior season and led the Greyhounds to a 19-9 record and the Mason-Dixon Conference regular-season title against a schedule that included four NIT teams. He earned All-State, All-Mason-Dixon Conference, and All-Tournament honors, and received the Rev. James Cogan Memorial Trophy as the best player in the Loyola-Mt. St. Mary's game. Pistorio also received Honorable Mention on the Catholic College All-America Basketball Team, which included such future pro stars as Bill Russell and K.C. Jones of the University of San Francisco and Tommy Heinsohn of Holy Cross. Pistorio was a top-notch golfer, and helped the Greyhounds to a Mason-Dixon Conference championship.
