PRINCETON, N.J. - The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's cross country teams split the squad this weekend, with members of the teams going to the Princeton Invitational and the Leopard Invitational Saturday afternoon.
A majority of the team traveled to Princeton, where the women finished 17th overall with 453 points and the men took 20th with 596 points.
"While we weren't perfect, we're improving significantly in our racing," head coach Amy Horst said. "We kept the training intensity up this week, and I'm excited to see the results after putting everything together. I can't wait to see the results of all their hard work at the Patriot League Championships."
Penn won the women's race with 71 points, while the University of Guelph finished second with 82 points and the University of Pittsburgh took third with 111 points.
For the second-straight meet, freshman Christina Daniels guided the Loyola as the team's top female finisher. The rookie distance runner took 46th in 22:30.5. Senior Erica Canas was the second Greyhound to cross the finish line, coming in 58th with a time of 22:46.7. Freshman Mary Sutton finished just inside the top 100, taking 99th in 23:35.3. Sophomore Kendyl Fahmy (110th, 23:54.0) and senior Sara Gilson (140th, 25:14.6) were the final two Greyhounds to contribute to the team total.
"Today's race was a great indication of what to expect from the NCAA Regionals, as we will race the same course in November," Horst said. "Christina had an outstanding race, positioning herself and her teammates early on and improving throughout the race. Erica also raced extremely smart and continued to be a leader in the front of our pack. Kendyl improved her placing today and ran a much more consistent race."
Freshman Courtney Wallace (143rd, 25:35.7), junior Caitlyn McGuinness (147th, 25:57.0), sophomore Casie Morgan (195th, 26:50.7), freshman Gabrielle Silvestri (197th, 26:53.7) and senior Emily Richards (203rd, 27:46.7) also competed for Loyola.
On the men's side, junior Chris Regan and sophomore Alex Saffadi finished 112th and 113th, respectively, coming in less than two seconds apart. Regan recorded a final race time of 26:12.9, while Saffadi came in at 26:14.3.
"The men really had a great improvement in racing today," Horst said. "They had a strong plan of working together in pack and executed it well. Chris and Alex ran the entire course side-by-side and helped push each other and pull along their teammates."
Junior Kevin Montgomery came in 122nd, finishing the 8k race in 26:31.3, while freshman Ben Hosford and junior Tom Porth rounded out the scoring, finishing 124th (27:00.0) and 125th (27:02.5), respectively.
Sophomore John Miller (135th, 27:57.8), freshman Alex Buchholz (136th, 28:06.1), junior Michael Michon (166th, 28:14.0) and freshman Leo Catinella (173rd, 29:01.0) also raced at the Princeton Invitational.
Penn won the men's race, totaling 42 points on the afternoon, while Villanova (51 points) and Guelph (73 points) finished second and third, respectively.
A number of Greyhounds also competed at Lafayette's Leopard Invitational Saturday afternoon, including freshman Edward Leonard (96th, 29:02.33), freshman Tyler Schoch (98th, 29:06.07), freshman Colin Chandler (102nd, 29:41.40), junior Jonathan Mugavero (111th, 30:13.29), junior Zachary Nerenberg (114th, 30:22.92), freshman Ryan O'Donnell (117th, 30:42.48), senior Sean Brennan (121st, 31:05.19), junior Michael O'Donnell (123rd, 31:14.34), senior Brandon Lim (129th, 32:16.84) and junior Corey Lyden (133rd, 39:28.00).
