McDevitt Leads Men's Cross Country at Pre-Nationals

Terra Haute, Ind. - Competing against eight of the top ten men's teams in the nation, the Greyhounds men's team placed 33rd out of 34 squads at the 2009 Indiana State University Pre-Nationals Invitational Saturday on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. The men bested IUPUI, who finished 34th as a team.
Senior Dan McDevitt led the charge for the men with an 88th place finish out of 238 runners in 25:02.8. The remainder of the scoring five were junior Stephen Febish (226th, 27:32.8), senior Terry Moran (228th, 27:36.2), sophomore Matt Hassett (229th, 27:42.5) and sophomore Jonathan Verrengia (233rd, 28:15.0). Also running for Loyola was junior Kieran Dowling (234th, 28:24.8) and freshman Eric Loose (236th, 29:11.2).
Oregon's Luke Puskedra won the individual title for the Ducks in 23:40.2. Oregon captured the team championship and were followed by Alabama, Northern Arizona, William & Mary and Washington.
The women competed in a very deep field as well, taking on seven of the country's top ten teams. Loyola finished 37th of 37 schools as juniors Amanda Bossi (197th, 23:17.6) and Alyssa Doyle (209th, 23:27.6) led the way. Taking third for the Greyhounds was senior Courtney McNamara (215th, 23:38.4) and sophomores Stephanie Gibney (224th, 23:52.6) and Emily Doucette (233rd, 24:15.1) rounded out the top five. Also competing were junior Kate Cervo (241st, 24:32.5) and sophomore Brittney Gibbons (246th, 25:38.1).
Illinois' Angela Bizzarri won the meet in 20:27.8. Washington won the team title and were followed by Florida, Princeton, Syracuse and Illinois.
Loyola also had a second men's and women's team competing at the Delaware Blue & Gold Invitational.
Freshman Emily Rooney led the `Hounds women to a 9th place team finish out of 14 teams, crossing the finish line in 51st place at 21:04.84. Sara Ochs (54th, 21:06.79), Alex Beaver (56th, 21:13.75) and Jackie D'Antonio (70th, 21:31.25) took second through fourth for Loyola, just under 27 seconds after Rooney. Meagan Keane rounded out the scoring for the Hounds with a 83rd place finish, covering the course in 22:12.26.
Leading the men's second team was junior Sean Barrett, who outkicked teammate Louis Manna at the finish to finish in 29:08.13 and 29:08.97, respectively. Third for Loyola was DJ Puleo who finished in 29:58.48 and he was followed by Charles Donnelly (94th, 31:31.09) and Jeffrey Malone (100th, 32:18.90).
Cross country returns to action Friday, October 30th, when it returns to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx to compete at the MAAC Championships. Both the men and women finished fourth at the conference championships in 2008.
