Andrea Rovegno Wins Gettysburg Invitational As Team Takes Second; Men's Cross Country Finishes Sixth
Oct. 16, 2004
Gettysburg, Pa. - Loyola sophomore Andrea Rovegno won her first race of the year as she led the women's cross country team to a second place finish out of 15 teams at the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhound men's cross country team took sixth out of 15 teams at the same meet.
Rovegno, who won three races as a freshman, but dealt with some early-season injuries this year, grabbed her first individual crown of 2004 after turning out an impressive 6,000-meter time of 22:17.
Jackie Truncellito was the next Loyola runner to finish as she took fourth place with a time of 22:58. Caitlin Dunne also placed in the top-20 for Loyola in grabbing 16th-place with a time of 23:57. Jackie Gaines (24:34) and Sarah Spencer (24:51) finished 32nd and 36th, respectively, to round out the scoring for the 'Hounds.
"The girls ran a fantastic race," said first year Head Coach Rick Woods, whose women's team fell only to Elizabethtown. "We're about back up to full strength now and almost fully recovered from some early season injuries so hopefully we can keep the momentum going."
On the men's side, Brendan O'Kane led Loyola as he recorded a 10th-place finish after running the 8,000-meter course in a time of 27:31. Greyhound senior James daSilva (15th-place, 27:36) finished just five seconds behind O'Kane and amazingly, five places behind O'Kane too as the field was extremely competitive.
The Greyhounds finished behind Elizabethtown, Aldersson Broadus, Frostburg State, St. Vincent's, and Washington and Lee. However, Woods said that Loyola could have easily finished third with slightly better times because the field was so tightly packed.
"The men will try to push a bit harder next time out," said Woods. "While we're not disappointed because everyone ran pretty well, the guys realized that had their times been just a little lower, third place was a virtual lock."
