Men's Cross Country Takes Second, Women Grab Third At Seagull Opener
Sept. 4, 2004
SALISBURY, MD -
James DaSilva took second place en route to leading Loyola's men's cross country team to a second place finish while Andrea Rovegno won the women's meet and guided the Greyhound women to a third place finish at the season-opening Seagull Opener hosted by Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon.
DaSilva, who has made a habit of finishing in the top-five throughout his collegiate career, got some help from a couple of freshmen as Brendan Kane began his Greyhound tenure with a fourth-place jaunt and rookie Andrew Rice captured seventh. The second-place team finish is Loyola's best finish since winning last year's McDaniel Invitational, which was the first team title in Loyola men's cross country history.
Sophomore Andrea Rovegno recorded her fifth career victory and 2003 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) individual champion Jackie Truncellito took second to lead the defending MAAC Champion Greyhounds in the women's race. Loyola Head Coach Rick Woods pointed out that the women's team may have placed higher had they not been forced to sit out a few key runners who are nursing minor early-season injuries. However, the first-year head coach went on to say that he was very pleased with both squads' efforts.
"This was a very positive, constructive meet for us," said Woods, after his first meet as a collegiate head coach. "We didn't back off on our training heading in to this meet - just sort of trained right through it -so our kids were a little tired. But, they toughed it out and performed very well."
Slippery Rock University, which boasts very strong men's and women's teams, took both team titles.
The Greyhound men's and women's teams will be back in action Saturday, September 11th at the Towson Invitational in Oregon Ridge, MD.
