Cross Country Begins The 2013 Season Strong In Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. - The Loyola men’s and women’s cross country teams got the 2013 seasons underway Saturday at the Seagull Open held at Winter Park Place in Salisbury, Md., as the women finished third and men came in seventh.
“Things went very well today,” said head coach Rick Woods. “We ran this as a workout, and I’m very pleased how everyone performed.”
Senior Kiera Harrison was the top Greyhound finisher, as she took third among 110 competitors. The veteran distance runner nearly broke into the top-10 program category with a time of 22:07.17, just seven seconds off the number 10 spot.
Anna Bosse finished just outside the top-10, taking 11th with a time of 22:56.36. Kelly Maguire (23:36.23) and Erica Canas (23:47.24) crossed the finish line 11 seconds apart. The two finished 19th and 21st, respectively. The final three point scorers for Loyola were Jessica Peters (23:59.90) in 26th, Sara Gilson (24:14:33) in 32nd, and Rachel Nerenberg (24:18.29) in 34th place.
Other Loyola female runners were Sarah Askine (24:47.23), Mary DeGregorio (25:30.30), Kelsey Killoran (25:31.50), Laura Watters (25:40.00), Caitlyn McGuinness (26:35.06), and Emily Richards (29:40.90).
Loyola’s women finished with 64 points, just nine points behind Rowan University the second place finisher. Fellow Baltimore neighbor Johns Hopkins took first on the women’s side.
On the men’s side, rookie Chris Regan finished 25th, with a time of 27:46.89. Michael Michon (28:14.59) and Patrick Makles (28:18.47) each crossed the finish line 37th and 39th,. Kevin Montgomery and Samuel Ballard were the next two Greyhounds to finish the 8k race, with times of 28:40.56 and 28:49.05, respectively in 53rd and 58th place. Freshmen Bradley Beard (29:03.18) and Dominic Piedmont (29:39.89) were the final Greyhounds to add points to the effort.
Other Greyhound runners were Nick Barletta (29:51.38), Tom Porth (30:07.66), Zach Nerenberg (30:10.74), Chris O’Brien (30:39.94), Ryan Blake (31:19.94), Sean Brennan (31:46.58), Giles Mosher (32:09.84), and Chris Graham (33:17.28).
Patriot League member, Navy, took top team honors for the men. The midshipmen finished with 29 points.
The cross country team is back in action Saturday, Sept. 14, when they compete at the Salty Dog Invite in Annapolis, Md. The starting gun will sound at 10 a.m.
