Hahn, Hughes Advance To Doubles Final Of ITA Summer Circuit Event

BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland rising sophomores Megan Hahn and Emily Hughes advanced to the final of the doubles bracket earlier this month in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Summer Circuit event at the University of Mary Washington.
The pair won three matches after receiving a bye in the first round, including an 8-3 semifinal victory over the top seed in the tournament, Virginia Tech's Kelly Williford and Natasha Provenshka.
Hahn and Hughes battled a pair of Blue Chip Program players, the University of Arkansas' Shannon Hudson and Harvard University's Spencer Liant who were the tournament's No. 2 seed, before being edged, 8-6.
Both players also competed in singles action at the tournament where Hahn advanced to the quarterfinals.
Hughes topped Louisiana State University's Skylar Holloway, 7-5, 6-3, in the first round before she was topped by her teammate Hahn, 6-1, 6-1, in the second.
Hahn moved on to the third round where she upset seventh-seeded Ama Osei of Temple University, 6-1, 6-1. Williford of Virginia Tech, who was seeded fourth, then defated Hahn in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-1.
The sophomores-to-be also played in the U.S. Open Middle States Sectional Qualifying Tournament last month at Mercer County Park in New Jersey. Both won their first round matches - Hughes topped Zhane Council, 6-0, 6-0, and Hahn beat Rachel Smilansky, 6-2, 6-0.
Both players fell in the second round to players from Syracuse University. Aleah Marrow beat Hughes, 6-3, 6-0, and Eva Raszkiewicz needed three sets to top Hahn, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Men's tennis rising sophomore Jordan Kuchta also played in the sectional qualifier, moving on to the second round before losing 6-3, 6-1, to Chris Rosensteel.
Four Loyola players teamed at the sectional qualifying tournament in the mixed doubles section. Hahn and Greg Olesnycky advanced to the second round where they were beaten, 6-1, 6-0, by Princeton University's Lindsay Graff and Matija Pecotic, the eventual champions.
Hughes and Kuchta were knocked out by Williford and Nicholas Bradley of Virginia Tech, 6-1, 6-2.
