June 11, 2014
The Loyola University Maryland women's tennis team tallied their 29th-straight winning season with 10 or more victories, as the Greyhounds went 10-7 overall. In conference play, Loyola sported a 1-3 record in its transition to the Patriot League. The Greyhounds fell to the 3rd-seeded U.S.Naval Academy in the quarterfinals at the League championships.
Senior co-captain Tiffany Ash completed her impressive four-year career at Loyola with 55 single wins, 15-5 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. She had 56 doubles triumphs, 16-7 in MAAC play, while leading the Greyhounds to a 51-28 team record. Ash partnered with Megan Hahn to win three matches and reach the "B" flight consolation finals at the St. Joseph's Invitational this season.
Junior co-captain Olivia Ott continued her successful ways with 12 wins at No. 5 singles, totaling 54 for her three-year career. Ott added 11 victories at No. 1 doubles, with two-year partner Hahn, giving her 57 wins in her pursuit of Carolyn Pilkington's 2000-04 Loyola record of 70.
The trio of Hahn, Haleigh Morgus, and Emily Hughes had a sensational sophomore season. Hahn played No. 1 singles for the second-consecutive year, leading Loyola with 21 wins. She captured the "A" flight championship at the Bucknell Invitational, while also winning the same title at the Mount St. Mary's tournament and Saint Joseph's Invitational. Hahn and Ott reached the "A" flight doubles semifinals at the Bucknell Invitational and finals at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational. Hahn was voted to the All-Patriot League Second Team and team MVP for the second year in a row.
Morgus duplicated her impressive 19 singles wins at No. 2 from her freshman campaign. She tied for the most team doubles wins with Hahn (15) while partnering with classmate Hughes. Morgus was 5-5 versus Patriot League competition and made it to the "B" flight singles finals at the Bucknell Invitational and Mount St. Marys, while reaching the "B" flight consolation singles finals at the Navy Invitational. She teamed with Ash to win the "B" flight doubles consolation at Mount St. Mary's tournament.
Hughes, who recovered from a major injury last summer, had a remarkable spring season for Loyola in singles and doubles. She was voted team most dedicated player for her efforts. She was 10-3 at No. 1 singles and 12-2 at No. 3 doubles with second-year partner Morgus as they had a 4-0 Patriot League record with triumphs over Army and Navy. They are 33-12 as a double team.
The women's team showed plenty of potential for upcoming seasons with quality performances from the freshman class. Katelyn Hissong competed well at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles with classmate Ania Krawiec. Together they amassed 11 wins while reaching the "A" flight semi-final at the Mt. St. Marys Invitational. Hissong had singles wins over Bucknell, Colgate, and Lafayette in Patriot League matches, and reached the "A" flight singles semi-finals at the Mount St. Mary's invitational.
Krawiec had an impressive initial campaign for the Greyhounds with 14 wins at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles. She had victories over Bucknell, Colgate, Lafayette, Towson, and George Mason, and she reached the semis of the "B" flight singles at the Bucknell tournament before winning the "B" flight doubles at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational.
Morgus was honored this season for her great academic standing and her second consecutive 4.0 semester, landing a spot on the Patriot League All-Academic Team. The women's squad placed first amongst Loyola's 18 sports for this past year and received a plaque for their outstanding 3.572 cumulative grade point average at the Athletic Banquet
