Six Tennis Players Earn All-MAAC; McClure Honored
April 27, 2012
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Loyola University Maryland Head Tennis Coach Rick McClure was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Coach of the year on Friday night, and six of his players earned All-MAAC honors.
Rachel Janasek received All-MAAC Second Team laurels at No. 1 singles, and she was joined on the team by Fedele at No. 3 singles and Scarlett Hoy and Lite at No. 2 doubles. Keyan Sanai was named to the All-MAAC Second Team on the men’s side at No. 1 singles.
Additionally, 11 Greyhounds were named to the MAAC All-Academic Teams. C.J. Chomeau, Patrick Glaessner, Bobby Gorczakowski, Connor Lisco, Eric Michaelis and J. Pierce Norton were honored on the men’s side, while Ash, Liz Black, Gabriella DeCarvalho, Janasek and Jackie Lionetta were recognized for the women.
McClure guided the Greyhound women to a 5-2 record and third-place finish in the conference during the regular-season. All told, Loyola went 17-7 during the 2011-2012 season in women’s tennis action.
McClure and the women’s team extended their streak of seasons with at least 10 dual-match wins to 26 with their record this season.
Lite boasted more No. 5 singles wins than any other player in the conference this season, going 6-1 for the Greyhounds in that flight.
Fedele and Ash earned All-MAAC First Team honors despite playing together just twice during MAAC action due to injuries elsewhere in the Greyhounds’ lineup. The duo, however, won both of their MAAC matches.
Fedele had the best record amongst MAAC No. 3 singles players in 2012, finishing the year 6-1 against conference foes.
Janasek is nearing the conclusion of her career as one of the top players in Loyola history. She went 4-3 at No. 1 singles against MAAC competition this year. Janasek is currently in second place all-time at Loyola with 76 singles victories, and she set the school mark for wins at No. 1 singles in a season, winning 16 times in the top flight.
Lite and Hoy finished the MAAC regular-season with a 4-3 mark at No. 2 doubles for the Greyhounds.
Sanai has been the Greyhounds’ top men’s player for each of the last four years, and he put together another solid year at No. 1 singles for Loyola in 2011-2012. Sanai went 4-2 in MAAC action at the top spot for Loyola as a senior.
The Greyhound women will play Saturday in the MAAC Semifinals at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J. They will take on No. 2 seed Marist College at 12 noon.
