BALTIMORE - MAAC Golf Championship Central
Three Loyola University Maryland teams head to the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships this weekend. The men’s and women’s rowing teams will be on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N..J., on Saturday, April 27, while the men’s and women’s tennis team will join them at Mercer County Park on Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28. The men’s golf team gets things started on Friday, April 26, at Disney’s Palm Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Following is a preview of each of the championships:
The Loyola University Maryland golf team returns to Disney’s Magnolia Course this weekend in search of its sixth-straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title, and third straight at the course. The Greyhounds – winners of 14 MAAC golf titles since joining the league in 1989 – will open the three-round tournament Friday morning, with competition concluding on Sunday.
Live scoring will be available here, while ESPN3.com will also produce highlight segments from the tournament.
At last year’s event, then-senior Jay Mulieri became the 10th Greyhound to win the McLeod Memorial Award as he led the Greyhounds to the team title with a MAAC-record 4-over 868.
Sophomore Bart George – the 2012 MAAC Rookie of the Year – also helped Loyola to the title and will return to the lineup this year. He will be joined by seniors Will Handley and Jonathon Ross, in addition to sophomore Brian McCormick and freshman Jimmy Dengler.
The Loyola University Maryland rowing teams are preparing for this weekend’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships that will be held on the Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., this Saturday.
The Greyhounds will not be eligible to win the championship this year due to squad size, but will still be competing in the individual events.
The men’s team finished fifth last season, as the Marist College Red Foxes took home the title with a combined score of 156. The Greyhounds’ men’s pair had the strongest finish in 2012, coming in second behind the Red Foxes. This season, Michael Blume and Juan Cadavid have had much success together, hoping to finish among the top of the heat, while the men’s varsity four received MAAC Boat of the Week honors once, after advancing to the petite final at the Knecht Cup April 14, 2013.
The Greyhounds will also compete in the men’s novice four, men’s junior varsity four, and men’s varsity lightweight four.
On the women’s side, Loyola looks to repeat success after making a strong appearance at last year’s championship. Veteran captain Kathleen Sweeney and teammate Shannon Connelly will compete in the women’s pair, while a number of the novice women will gain experience competing in the women’s novice eight. The women’s varsity four looks to regain momentum, after receiving back-to-back MAAC Boat of the Week honors April 2nd and 9th.
The men and women’s tennis teams enter the 2013 MAAC Championships as the No. 4 seeds on Saturday, April 27. The men will take on No. 1 seed Marist in the semifinals at 2 p.m., as the women match up against No. 1 seed Fairfield University Stags in the semifinals at 10 a.m.
The men’s team concluded the MAAC regular-season with a 3-3 record in the conference, coming off a 5-2 victory over Saint Peter’s to seal their trip to the tournament.
Loyola is led by senior captain Bobby Gorczakowski who will graduate as one of the most decorated players in the history of the program. Gorczakowski holds the most all-time doubles wins in a career with 65 and has the second most singles wins all-time in a Greyhound career with a 62-36 record.
The Greyhounds will also be looking for strong play from doubles partners, Harrison Kunkel and Connor Lisco, as they go into the weekend with a three-match win streak at #2 doubles. The team also has received solid performances throughout the season by freshmen standouts Connor Pietrak, Jordan Kuchta and Greg Olesnycky. Pietrak and Gorczakowski share a program record at #1 doubles for the most victories in a season with the same partner, as they finished with 22 wins.
The women’s team completed their MAAC regular-season with a 7-0 victory over Saint Peter’s placing them into the conference tournament with a 4-3 record.
The Greyhounds are led by freshman Megan Hahn who collected her 25th #1 singles win for the season over George Mason University. Hahn is teamed up with sophomore Olivia Ott at #2 doubles. With their victory against George Mason, the duo tallied their 21st win for the season.
Loyola will also be looking for a solid performance from senior captain Scarlett Hoy at #4 singles. Hoy closes her career with the Greyhounds with 50 singles’ victories along with 52 doubles’. The team will also look for strong play from freshmen Haleigh Morgus and Emily Hughes and junior Tiffany Ash. Morgus and Hughes have paired up at #1 doubles for the Greyhounds throughout the season.
