Crew, Golf, Tennis Set For 2012 MAAC Championships
April 25, 2012
Three Loyola University Maryland teams head to the 2012 MAAC Championships this weekend. The men’s and women’s crew teams will be on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N..J., on Saturday, April 28, while the women’s tennis team will join them at Mercer County Park on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29. The men’s golf team gets things started on Friday, April 27, at Disney’s Magnolia Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Following is a preview of each of the championships:
The Loyola University Maryland men’s and women’s crew teams head to Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J., on Saturday for the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rowing Championships.
After having the 2011 championships canceled due to inclement weather, the championship returns to Mercer Lake for the eight-straight season.
After finishing second in 2010, the Greyhound men look for their first conference title since 2000 when Loyola edged out Marist. Since that time, the Greyhounds have finished second six times while the Red Foxes have captured 10-straight titles.
Loyola has received strong performances from its varsity four boat all season, having earned MAAC Boat of the Week three times this year. The boat has featured Christopher Golon, Jordan Mastera, Thomas Quinn, Ryan Walsh and Joe Wawrzynski.
The women’s side has won back-to-back MAAC championships, capturing titles in 2009 and 2010. The Greyhound women will not be eligible to win the championship this year due to squad size requirements, but will still be competing in the events.
The varsity four boat also has been strong on the women’s side, with three MAAC Boat of the Week honors to their credit. The crew includes Katherine Griffin, Amanda Adsit, Margaret Ajello, Catriona Miller and Julianne Roccuzzo.
The Loyola University Maryland golf team returns to Disney’s Magnolia Course this weekend in search of its fifth-straight Metro AtlanticAthletic Conference title, and second straight at the course. The Greyhounds – winners of 13 MAAC golf titles since joining the league in 1989 – will open the three-round tournament Friday morning, with competition concluding on Sunday.
Live scoring will be available here (http://www.golfstatresults.com/public/index.cfm?tournament_id=3197), while ESPN3.com will also produce highlight segments from the tournament.
“I’m happy with the way that everyone has been coming together and playing lately,” head coach Chris Baloga said. “We’re peaking at the right time and this course sets up nicely for the way that we play. We’re excited to go down to Florida and compete for a championship.”
At last year’s event, senior Patrick McCormick tied for the tournament’s lowest score with a 1-over 217, but lost on the first hole of a playoff round. He and senior Ryan McCarthy are the only two Greyhounds to compete at last year’s event that will return this year.
Senior Jay Mulieri – a three-time MAAC Golfer of the Month this season – will join his classmates for this year’s conference tournament, while sophomore Brendan Lemp and freshman Bart George will round out the Greyhounds’ lineup.
The women’s tennis team enters the 2012 MAAC Championship as the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 2 seed Marist in the semifinals at noon on Saturday, April 28.
The Greyhounds concluded the MAAC regular-season with a 5-2 record in the conference, with the only losses coming to No. 2 seed Marist and No. 1 seed Fairfield.
Loyola is led at No. 1 singles by Rachel Janasek, who moved into second all-time at Loyola with her 76th career victory, leaving her 11 shy of Colleen Ruane’s school record. Janasek set the school dual match record for No. 1 singles wins with 16 victories this season.
The Greyhounds also will be looking for strong play from Scarlett Hoy at No. 2 singles and Sabrina Fedele, a MAAC Player of the Week selection earlier this season, at No. 3 singles. The team also has received solid play this season from Tiffany Ash at No. 4, and Judy Lite at No. 5. Lite is coming off a straight-set win against Fairfield in the regular-season finale.
Loyola and Marist met just a short time ago, with the Red Foxes edging the Greyhounds, 4-3, in Baltimore. Marist started strong, taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Hoy and Lite teamed up for a win over Sabrina Tahir and Kayla O’Donovan at No. 2 doubles.
Janasek, Fedele and Jackie Lionetta each earned points as each team earned three singles points. Janasek topped Kayla Raynor in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Fedele won at No. 3 singles, beating Joana Sun, 7-6 (4), 6-1. Lionetta rounded out the Loyola win with a straight-set win over O’Donovan, 6-2, 6-4.
