Tennis Teams Wrap Up Weekend At Patriot League Kickoff

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland freshman Charlie Shanker finished second in his singles flight, and the teams of C.J. Cash and Reid Burch, plus Brian Hoffarth and Kyle Gower, did the same in their doubles brackets Sunday as the Greyhounds closed competition at the Patriot League Kickoff Tournament.

Cash and Burch defeated Colgate's Noah Rosenblat and Tyler Krantz, 6-4, in Sunday's semifinal of Flight A doubles, but the pair fell, 7-5, in the title match to the Raiders' Jacob Daugherty and Scott Bickel. Daugherty and Bickel advanced to the final with a 6-2 win over Loyola's Blest Jones and Matt Fitzmaurice.

Brian Hoffarth and Kyle Gower topped Lehigh's Cooper and Born, 6-2, in the Flight B semifinals. The fell, 6-3, in the flight's title match to Lehigh's Christopher Auteri and Harry Wang.

Charlie Shanker advances to the final of Flight D singles where he was beaten by Lehigh's Bryant Born, 7-5, 6-4.

In consolation singles play, Jones advanced to the Flight A title match with a win over Lafayette's Noah Yurconic, 8-1, but he was edged, 6-2, 6-2, by Bickel in the consolation final.

Burch was an 8-5 winner in the Flight B consolation semifinals over Lafayette's Ethan Baldwin. Alec Dardis then defeated Burch, 6-1, 6-2, in the consolation final.

Fitzmaurice won the Flight C consolation final, knocking off Matthew Debenditto of Lafayette, 8-5, in the semifinal and Krantz, 6-4, 7-6 (4), in the final.

Jack Shortell won the Flight D consolation final on Sunday. He beat Lafayette's Andrew Reed, 8-2, in the quarterfinals, the Leopards' Rooks, 8-1, in the semifinal and Lehigh's Sam Bencheghib, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-5, in the final.

On the women's side, Jenna Granato used an 8-6 Flight D consolation quarterfinals win over Colgate's Callie Bartimer to advance to the semifinals where she moved past Colgate's Stephanie Fuentes. Army West Point's Bridget Mayfield beat Granato, 6-2, 7-6 (6).

The competition was the final of the fall for the women's tennis team, while the men will be back in action October 27-29 at the Navy Men's Tennis Invitational.
