Shanker To Play For Flight Title At Patriot League Kickoff

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Charlie Shanker won two matches on Saturday for the Loyola University Maryland men's tennis team,a nd he will will play for the Flight D singles title on Sunday at the Patriot League Kickoff Tournament at Lehigh University.

Shanker will face Lehigh's Bryant Born at 11 a.m. Shanker got past Lafayette's Mason Keel, 7-5, 7-5, in the quarterfinals and then defeated Colgate's Jack Albon, 6-3 (retired) in the semis.

C.J. Cash won in straight sets, 4-2, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of Flight B against Lafayette's Mason Kramer before falling in a close match, 5-7, 7-5, 10-7, to Lehigh's Harry Wang in the semifinals. Reid Burch fell, 4-2, 4-0, in the flight quarterfinals to Lehigh's Jacob Edelchik.

Kyle Gower advanced to the semifinals of Flight C with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Coglate's Tyler Krantz in the quarters. He then was edged by Lehigh's George Cooper, 1-6, 6-4, 11-9 in the semifinals. Matt Fitzmaurice lost, 4-1, 4-2, in the flight's quarterfinals to Colgate's Peter Hartman.

Collin Kanuch also advanced to the Flight D semifinals after winning 6-3, 6-1 against Lafayette's Chris Kim. Born slipped past him to earn the right to face Shanker in the title match, beating Shanker, 6-7 (1), 6-4, 10-8.

On the women's side, Kateri Martin won her Flight A quarterfinals match, 6-3, 6-4, over Army West Point's Melanie Allen. She then was topped in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-1 by Lehigh's Sibel Can. Amanda Lanciano fell in three sets, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 10-0 in the quarterfinals to Lehigh's Christina Auyeung.

Colgate's Lauren O'Brien edged Lin Robertson in the Flight B quarterfinals, 5-4 (2), 3-5, 10-4. Chloe Boustany and Julie Clark each were defeated in the Flight C quarterfinals. Boustany fell, 6-4, 6-0 to Lehigh's Kristin Godau, and Clark was defeated by Army's Abi Waldman, 6-4, 6-2.

Doubles play will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday as action resumes.
